Custom build v Crossride wheels

My wheel upgrade is coming sooner than expected.Today I lost the chain into the spokes so have a rear wheel with chewed spokes.

I had originally been tempted by the good reviews I've seen for Mavic Crossrides,but seeing the deal on Merlin for their XT/DT Swiss 4.2 wheelset at £125 has made me think again.

My bike is a much upgraded Giant XTC,(approx 25lb) currently running Deore M525 hubs with XM317 rims,I weigh a tad under 14 stone and most of my riding is light xc.

Is the DT 4.2d rim comparable with a Mavic 717?Are the ACI db spokes good enough or would you upgarade to DT?

What size tyre could I go up to with the DT4.2 rim?


Whilst weight isn`t the overiding criteria,it would be nice to lose some weight from the wheels.

Thoughts please!

DT and Mavic both make superb rims, and ACI spokes are just as good as their equivalent, the DT Comp DB. I'd take the XT build: fully handbuilt, 32 spokes, and I belive the hub and freehub to be more durable too. Spokes easier to get too. The weight difference between them both is negligable.

Oh tyre size, I would say 2.3 on the 4.2d, though do check. This would give a rounded profile though.

Following my succesful wheel repair,these might have to go on the backburner for a while.At least until I get my bonus next month.
