Jumping gears

Just setting up the gears on a 2nd hand bike I've bought.

Have a 6 speed freewheel.

All gears are fine, except when I'm in 3rd gear (where 1st gear = the one with the most teeth, and 6th = with the least teeth), the chain keeps jumping.

This happens if I am on the small or big front chainring.

Driving me mad because when in the big chainring I would normally use the 3rd gear on the freewheel most.

Have checked to see if the gear changer (frame mounted) is screwed in tightly (it is), and when looking at the rear mech when in 3rd gear, the jockey wheels line up fine.

Could it be the chain? But if it was the chain, why would it jump only in this one gear?

Or could it be damaged teeth on that 3rd gear on the freewheel - forgot to check that one...

Sounds like a worn cog and chain. Very likely to need replacement.

Could be a few different reasons, hate commenting on peoples problems when you actually can't see the problem in front of you. Are they indexed gears? I do know of some old 6 speeds that are not, if they are then you may just need the gears adjusted(cost around 6-10 notes, depending on where you go)

The other reason could be that the block and chain are badly worn and whenever you put pressure on the drive ( chain and block) then the you'll get slipped gears, almost as if the chain can't get a grip on the block. If that's the case then you'll need to change both the chain and block. Good news id that because it's a screw on 6 speed it should not cost more that £25 at any decent LBS.

    Hope that helps.

PS. The reason it would slip on only one gear is because, like yourself the previous owner maybe used 3rd gear more often than any other, if that's the case then the wear would be more noticeable than any other gear.

Put the chain on any gear and go to the chainrings at the front, if you can pull the chain more than 5mm off the chainrings then the chain is badly worn and needs replaced.
