hi i am saving up for a new bike and i wanted to get into FR/DH. There is a forest close to my house but i have to climb some steep long uphills to get there (if my dad doesnt give me a lift). I live in Scotland and go to Wolftrax, Glentress and i want to go to Fort William and Innerleithen regularly. This means i would like a bike that can get up hills reasonably well but have a blast going down them. i would rather that it had a good 5-7" of travel. I am looking for a bike in the region of LESS THAN £1600, this isnt taking into account the 07 models that are going to be superceeded at the end of Septembre. I have been looking at a Kona Coiler Dee-Lux 07 because this will soon be £1500. Please give any advice as it will be greatly appreciated!! :D:D:D

A DH bike of this price can be winched up hills, but very slowly. You need to look more closely at all your riding types. Do you want more of an allrounder? Say 6inches each end, not too heavy that will perofm on trails too? Commencal Meta may be an option - tough allmountain bike that performs well in all conditions.
  • well i havent done dh before but i would like a bike that would be capable of Fort William but not nearly as fast as any of the profs or even jr racers!! i would like to be doing drops of about 5' then when i improve i would obviously like to do bigger ones but im not going to be doing 12'+. does this help??

Maybe something tougher than the meta then. Usually toughness does mean more weight though! The coiler bike is loved by many, but again you are sacrficing climbing and trail work for FR and DH. I think a compromise will have to be made, unless you take a lighter bike and be carefull! Norco Shore 2 or 3 worth looking at too.
  • the norcos will be rite bast**** to get up hills!! plus i wont be able to lock the back out to get up the hill cos it isnt a dhx 4 or 5! ive read most of the reviews on this site nd they all seem to be rele good! :http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Freeride_Full_Suspension/product_123012.shtml . thanks for ur input so far :D

Like I say, gonna have to make some compromise! Light uphill abilty usually means it aint gonna descend too well, unless you spend another 2k! Thats why I initially though more of an All Mountain bike, but it does seem you favour the more extreme stuff.
  • yerr. in the reviews it says that the coiler is good a dj, fr, dh and a little xc!! so at the mo that is my favorite. nope sorry but i thought that £1600 was a lot so any others considerably higher are sort of out of the question! i would b prepared to spend a little over budjet if u think it is worth it, but i need to come up with the money so i need to find a summer job!! lol

It is alot of money, and I think you will find what you want after you have tried a few out. I was just trying to say the following: strong, light, cheap - pick any two! The full suss Konas have a lot of fans, be well worth having a go on one.
  • strong and cheap (if u mean £1600 region). yeah hopefully they will have another demo day at wolftrax soon so i will try out some there! :D thanks for all ur advice!!
