And if anyone was wondering about the ambulance shortly after the midway stop, that was one of ours who had described a face-plant. He's fine, just uglier now.
Ah...was that the young guy with the Bob Jackson......he looked quite shocked at Ipswich station....full marks to him for admitting he tried to adjust his mudguard whilst on the move with his foot tho :shock:0 -
Young Phil with a fatigue-inspired error of judgement, though by the time he re-tells it I'll bet you he was swerving to avoid an endangered hedgehog or somethingWanted: Penny farthing. Please PM me!

You could always have another go this coming weekend: weather looks like being mid-twenties °C Saturday afternoon and clear skies through to mid-day Sunday.0 -
I'm pleased to report that I successfully finished my third DD.
I didn't even pack a waterproof! The rain didn;t really bother me until it started pelting down when I was nearly at the food stop. I took shelter in a multistorey car park only to find out that my mobile phone had packed in due to the rain - I was trying to text my partner to let her know where I was - she was following me on the map at home . I was now on my back up (work) phone.
And I don;t think I realised how wet I was until then. I arrived at the food stop around 2.30; I stood and dripped inside where it was nice and warm. I didn;t fancy the queue and since I had plenty of food and water - wasn;t worried about buying more, even if it was nice and hot.
I warmed up nicely - noticing for the first time that there were widely spread mutterings of dropping out of the ride. I was a little surprised at this as the rain hadn't really bothered me a great deal. In fact - the rain seemed warm. That's how you can tell it was summer - ha ha!
But then, back on the road, even though the rain had stopped, I felt extrememely cold. Suddenly I wasn;t sure if I could go on. Luckily I had a secret weapon - a thick fleece packed in one of my panniers. I put it on and was warm again.
After a wrong turning I got into a group which I stayed with for a while. But I was flagging. And many many people overtook me including Andy Gates with his kilt flapping around him. I recognised you, Andy, from your Avatar.
It was a mere blip - after an hour, and a few sugary snacks I was back up to speed and enjoying the daylight. I managed to finish at 8.30 - a poor show compared to last year's 5.50 am. The rain slowed me down - a couple of wrong turns when I was alone - too many stops to text my partner - and the fact that I flagged seriously after the food stop.
But overall - I really enjoyed it. The beach was wonderful. I had a beer and a fried breakfast and a three hour sleep on the beach. After that I cycled along the coast for a while and booked in to accomodation - my partner arrived and we had a long very enjoyable weekend.0 -
I've never ridden in such awful weather, and for so long ,,, but I'd do it all over again!!!
My 2nd Dun Run, and it was awesome. It was low drizle from 20:30 onwards at the start and I just couldn't decide wether to put the waterproof jacket or regular jersey on. I put the waterproof on and soon started swetting. Anyway, the rain came down, my lower half got very wet, I was cold, I could hardly see where I was going, and I was having trouble changing the front gears.
We arrived at the feeding station at about 3:00 - it was quite warm and a nice haven. When we came out the rain had really dropped off quite a bit, and for the next 60 miles, it was great - the sun came out, we got to Dunwich about 11:00 and I had a really great swim (does wonders even if you have tired legs) sans trunks.
Barry Mason has done a nice little summary at http://www.southwarkcyclists.org.uk - worth a tread.
I took:
- 3 water bottles
- medium tuperware container of dried fruit (raisins, dates, apricots), soaked for about 3 hours and then drained
- several Yaoh bars cut into small pieces
- one Lara bar cut into small pieces
- Pulsin energy bombs raw cholcolate balls
- 1 bar of raw chocolate
- 1 omega-3 organic food bar cut into small pieces
- Sprouted wheat bread sandwiches with tahini topped with banana slices
Yep, lots of snacks!!!
Here's to 2008 - can't wait (19th July)

Well done guys, I was going to give it a go this year but bailed as I wasn't feeling that great and the weather looked dire..
A couple of my friends started it but were pointed in the wrong directions somehow (they've cycled it before) they basically ended up near Luton and managed to blag sleeping in a kebab shop... poor sodsPurveyor of sonic doom

It was my first dun run and I have to say even despite the weather, I definately enjoyed it and will be doing it again next year!!
Got to the feed station at 12.30 very wet! I had to wring out my socks leaving puddles on the floor Got a nice little soup and roll (arrived just before the queues started) and had a very strong cup of coffee. Left the food station at 1.20 (didnt realise I'd spent 50mins sitting around at the time). Was pretty cold for a while until I got going again. Ended up getting caught up in a fast group, didnt pay attention to my gps and got lost with them. After a few miles we finally made it back on course and then I got a puncture. Fixed it but my tyre pressure was very low. Then got another puncture when the sun came up about 20miles out of dunwich. Finally made it to the beach at 6.15, to find the nice chap I'd met at the start (and ridden parts of the way with) already there tucking into his full english! (damn those punctures).
Had some brekkie, then sat there shivering for a bit and went to get the 8.45 train from Darsham back to london. Only when I got to Liverpool St I realised that sitting in wet shorts for 5 hours after you've been riding all night in the rain isn't very good for your bum! I could hardly sit on the saddle and realised I'd lost a little skin of my arse cheeks! lol
All in all a great way to spend a saturday night and felt much more accomplishment than waking up with a hangover on a sunday morning!0
