setting up gears

have just finshed putting my new bike together however im havin a problem setting the gears up i run a single speed chain and have a 9 speed xtr rapid rise rear mech 9 speed cassette but i cant get it to hit the bottom ring or the top ring any help would be great thanks :)

    Buy a 9spd chain if you are running a 9spd cassette.

    and read the great info on park tools.

    it is a 9 speed chain
