Front wheel on new mtb not straight - what should I do?

Hi,

I just took delivery of my first proper mtb, a Commencal Combi. While setting it up I noticed that the front wheel is not tracking straight. It appears to be very very slightly bent. I first noticed it when I was setting up the v-brakes as I could hear the wheel rubbing at one point in its rotation. I don't want to complain about nothing so is there an accepted tolerance when it comes to wheels being perfectly straight or should I make a nuisance of myself?

Cheers.

    There is no accepted tolerance.

It should be perfect to with about 0.2mm when brand new.

You can either true it yourself with a spoke wrench or complain and see what they do for you.
I used to be undecided but now I\'m not so sure!?

Take it back and have them sort it.

Yup. Some wheels arrive a bit wobbly. And sometimes they slip through the shop's check - but they shouldn't really. No fuss, they'll true it up without trouble.

Did the bike arrive in a box for you to build? Unfortunatley if it did, its up to you to build the bike to a satisfying standard, the shop can't really be blamed. However I am sure they are more than willing to help if you can take it back.

Thanks for the quick replies! I phoned the shop (the bike was sent mail order) and they offered to pay for the wheel to be fixed by my local bike shop. Very decent of them considering the damage was probably done in transit. Hopefully it will just need some of the spokes tightening.

That is very decent of them! I worked in a bike shop for 2 years, almost every wheel needed a little tweaking from the factory out of the box (they are machine built). This is one of the dis advantages of buying online like this.
