Sticky cable

I have problems with a rear hayes Mech disc brake. The cable ends to get gritty and in wet conditions the lever sticks and doesn't retract.
I'm going to replace the cable. Would a teflon coated one be better than plain old stainless steel?

It would a little. The key with mech discs is to get the best cable you can afford. Clarks clim8 sealed cables, and avid flak jackets are good.

I guess youll be getting new outers as well?
    If not, DO!

They make a big difference with mech disk brakes

By outer I take you mean the housing, that the cable runs through?

Yes. A compressionless one would yield good results.

as mentioned, make sure you replace the black outters. they are more important to change than the inners! people always change the inners and wonder why they still don't work. also make sure the cables have metal ferruls on. i changed a cable last week that a bik e shope had put on and the went after a week! i wonder why!

    That's good advice re: outers/housing.
It was only in the bike shop a couple of weeks ago for its first service, these problems were mentioned to the youngling doing the service. I'll take it back again.

Flying Snake cables, sealed the whole length even is you have o cut the outers and a triple slide system (ie wire/liner/outer). Better than the Avid Flak jackets that dont truly seal

Do you know how much these "Flying snake" cable set for a rear brake would cost?
The front brake never has any problem, I assume because that sealed it's whole length.

About £19 a set from Wiggle or CRC

Have them on all my bikes now, superb. better than the Avid Flak Jackets

With the flying snake you cut the outer as normal, but the outer lines is continous for the whole length of the inner wire, so its effectively waterproof.

The wire can move within the inner liner and the inner liner can move within the outers (like normal)

For the gear ones you even get a special thin bit of outer to go under the BB if you have a run that does that so this bit doesnt get dirty and clogged
