edited July 2007 in MTB buying advice
I'm not a racer, and I'm not a commuter (as I work from home now!!), but I want something for 10 miles ride each morning and evening. Something light but without the day glow stripes!! I was initially after a new MTB but this would mean driving to get the best out of it, so for now, something for the roads will have to suffice.

Any recommendations for a 500-700 budget? (anything in the current sales for a 6' average weight male?)

Any advice over tripple / double derailer - for example the spec allez?

How are rim brakes now adays, do they still squeal like a scared rabbit or have they been cured of this problem? (yes my current bike is an ancient decrepit rusting rigid mtb with rim brakes)

Well i took the scott sub 20 for a test ride today and man than thing was harsh on your body..
felt every bump on the road and shit myself when i was going full speed down a fairly big hill, if your used to Hydro discs goin back to Vbrakes is a shock!

But i asked myself do i really need Discs, good group sets and forks?

I want a bike for camping & general cycle path mileage at home i have been looking at the scott sub 20, scott sportster p4 and the ridgeback terrain MX4, to be honest the terrain is the cheapest one of the 3 at £269 online and the one i am drawn to. Lower end components, but a nice looking bike ( i suppose looks is all you can go for at that price) its fairly light and will do the job.

The bike bug has me again and i am seriously tempted to buy a £500 MTB and swap the tyres for some nice fast slicks and have a fairly decent 'roadie' but with some suspension as the sub 20 was a bone shaker, very fast and light though..

I am having real trouble choosing a bike for 500 and under,

    Giant XTC4.5
    Scott reflex 40 / 45
    Claud butler cape wrath

All good value bikes, i just gonn a look into some spech bikes now... :(

If you are going to ride on the road only and like a bit of speed, get a road bike.
I have 2 bikes a 25lb Giant XTC for off road and an old Technisport road bike built built around a steel 531 frame, which I commute on.
Even with old worn parts, and cheap wheels, the road bike leaves the mtb standing,on the road.

I have had a hybrid before and they are useless off road, and not as fast as a dedicated road bike on road.Unless you favour the more relaxed riding positionof a hybrid,I'd go for a road bike.

(If I had enough money,I'd have a bike for every occasion!)

The Specialized Allez is a good one,as is something like the Trek 1200.

My side pull brakes stop me very well,in the dry provided they are properly set up.
The power of the hydraulic discs on my XTC is still something of a shock the first time back on the mtb, though! :D

i just bought my bike today, after lots of walking around and test rides i plumped for a cannondale F6 2008 model for £369, got some nice armadillo slicks whacked on and all seems well..

after riding a few of these 'urban' or 'city' bikes i think a lower to mid model MTB with a tyre change will suit me just fine.

there are far to many bikes at this price range.. my final choice was the cannondale or the felt Q800s for slightly more money http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=70348

I have had enough, no more looking.
