What Happened to Fork Boots?

Fork boots (the rubber that used to go over suspension) seem to have disappeared from bikes nowadays. I thought they were meant to protect the fork. Why are they never found on new bikes now?

    not needed and cause more damage than they stop, the only ones that have then are the really bad ones.

    Advances in technology/knowledge = better seals, so the fork boots are now redundant.
    Less gears, more beers.
