Hardrock Sport HYD v Giant Terrago Disc

I am currently considering these bikes, any advice would be helpful!!

I am a beginner who used to trails a little bit about 15 years ago so all the technology has changed so much. I am wanting to get back into doing trails and maybe commuting to work (15 miles roundtrip). Are these bikes suitable?

    These bikes are both aimed at the budget rider for riding trails. They need to be tried out, but in my mind the Terrago is a far better bike. 9spd, damped fork, twin piston brakes, lighter compared to basic 8spd transmission, undamped fork and single piston hayes brakes with its all in weight of 34lbs.

    Also take a look at the Trek 4500, Genesis Core, GT Avalanche 2.0 and GT Aggressor XC2

    I looked at those two bikes, and plumped for the better-specified Giant.

    It's a fantastic bike for the cash. Frame is a gem, brakes are good, all components are well specified for the price. It's strong, durable, and great to ride.

    The only shortcomings are the tyres (unnamed Kendas) which I found prone to puncturing, lacked grip, and dragged like hell, and the Suntour XCR forks (though I think they've been upgraded this year) which were very bouncy.

    I've put Panaracer Fire XC Pro and Cinder tyres on, and swapped the fork for a RS Reba SL, and now think I have a great bike. I use it for commuting and take a roundabout offroad route home, along with weekend social rides.

    So it looks like the Giant Terrago Disc which I can get for £360 from wheelies through my work.

    The Hardrock is priced at £370 now on most sites so the terrago does look like the better option.

    Giant Terrago for me. I just got my Terrago delivered on friday and i am chuffed to bits with it! Excellent spec for the price and lighter than the Spec Hardrock. If you shop around you will get a good deal i only paid £339 for mine latest model as well..Haggle!!
    In the price range i don't think you will get a better bike.

    Online - Winstanley. Tredz will offer a good deal as well. I wanted the old model at £325 but they didn't have my size and got new model for under £340 well chuffed. LBS offered me £380 and i didn't even ask, could of got them lower if i tried but didn't think he would match £340. I tried about 12 different sites called them all up and haggled and got down to 2.

    Don't underestimate the benefits of buying at your LBS though, even if you do pay a little bit more. The aftersales service you'll receive may well be worth far more than the price premium.

    I don't have a half-way decent LBS with 20 miles, and a decent one is 30 miles distant, so I went the on-line route (I still paid £399 for my Terrago though, but some time ago) as I wouldn't actually get any real benefit.

    I asked my LBS (dales in glasgow) about a discount and they said they wouldn't discount the spring model and have sold out of the earlier 2007 edition so that's why I am looking at buying online.

    Just need to haggle a little now :lol:
