Turning off avatars?

Is there any way of switching off avatars so that individuals can choose not to view them? Or get rid of them completely? Crap pictures just clutter up the forum and make it all the more conspicuous for those of us having a look while at work.

Shouldn't you be 'working' while at work? ;)

I'll agree pics in signatures can clutter the board up but an avatar has very little effect in the clutter department...and I doubt any of them are as conspicuous as the adverts on the board.

Adverts have to be on the board, its all part and parcel of the industry and of course how you can get great content on this site for free.

Avatars are either on or off from a board wide perspective. However I have limited to size to 80x80 pixels. I will be attempting to incorporate something similar to the signatures at some point. However if anyone does abuse the use of images in any context, the images will be removed and user given a warning, if they clearly abuse the feature repeatedly they will be banned from using the forums.

We can't do everything for you, the users make the community and are just as responsible for the conduct of their fellow posters as we are.

Your more than welcome to use adblock, for those who dont have it do a search within the firefox extension manager.

We aren't ever going to force anyone to see the adverts, its your choice but they are far from obtrusive.

My point was aimed at avatars not cluttering up a board rather than getting at the adverts.

Can't you get your browser not to download any graphics at all?

I think there also special sites for people at work which strip out all graphics and give web pages the look and feel of a Word doc.

It doesn't look like you have!!

There are several avatars that are well over that size

Yeah i actually only just realised that! Was quite blind to read avatars as adverts!!

Anyway back to the point I should have made, avatars have now been limited to being uploaded to our servers and enforced to max size of 80x80 pixels. There is no current way to turn them of from a client level but I am going to have a look to see if there are any mods that can perhaps change this. :)

There is an add on for Firefox called 'image show hide' that turns images on/off like a switch.

Adblock plus does the same sort of thing. you can block specific pictures, whole frames, ads pictures, flash etc

i suppose this is only useful if you use firefox ;)

Firefox is a far superior browser, so its highly recommended if you are stuck using Internet Explorer. :) Gets a 5 out of 5 clear: left's from me!

The size is definitely limited to 80 by 80 now.

Yeah I agree that Ad-Block is much better than Image Show Hide for this purpose, while it just does what it says, it blocks all images on the page and that can break the formatting and layout of the page. Ad-Block allows you to be granular in which images you want to block, i.e. you can block one persons avatar but allow anothers. You can also block all the buttons for IMing that can be a little annoying.
