Greasing Shimano SPD pedals

Does anyone know of an easy way to grease the axles of my PD-M520 pedals please?
I have one which seems to be running dry but am not keen on buying a special tool to open up a £20 pedal and have heard that it is possible to drill a small hole in the end-cap and use a grease gun to force lubricant in.

wiggle does the special tool, it's not that expensive, and you can then use it and grease the bearing every 6 - 12 months. I bought one a few weeks ago for my road bikes.0
