Thanks Rich. Your site is very interesting. I don't know if this idea is likely to take off but I'd really like people to post their packing lists as well as their pics of loaded bikes. I'm hoping to go on a camping tour without panniers and I always wonder what people have got in their bags. Do I need whatever is in there, and will I have to give in and get panniers? You have a large volume of stuff, even though some things are shared between two people, so I've been looking at your site noting some of the bulky things on your kit list:

    - spacious 9 lb tent
    - full size laptop
    - 2 cameras
    - lots of street clothes which don't pack small???
    - waterpoof over- trousers
    - full set of pans
    - shortwave radio

By the way, do you get much of an income from the ads on your site?

  • It's true, we have a load.

Some tourers we've met are perfectly happy with little. In fact, some thrive on the idea that they need few possessions. I have to admit, there are times when this really appeals to me as well. For some strange reason hills bring it on strongly.

But then we have a day like today. Hard rain for much of the day while stuck in a tiny beach cottage here in Langkawi, Malaysia. The BBC comes in crystal clear on the shortwave. This morning I began to write a story on the laptop. Lunch was a delicious couscous made using both pots.

I guess it all depends on how much time is spent on the road and how often you stay in one place. If you will be on the road most days then the minimalist approach is best. The longer you will be static, the more gear you might want to carry.

For us being in constant motion is disorienting. When pedaling every day we have trouble getting a feel for any one place. Others enjoy the challenge of pedaling from X to Y in so many days. We find pleasure in getting to a place by bicycle then staying for a few days. There is satisfaction in both.

  • Oh.... the google adsense advertising on our site earns about US$100 a month. The Amazon links and Consumer Junction links add another bit. We are not getting rich from the advertising but it covers some costs of our tour.

If you need help with adding these to your site send me a message and I'd be happy to help. It is really easy.

Go to www.google.com/adsense and follow the instructions.

I hope the rain eases off - but it sounds like you are having a great time! Must be fun to cook proper meals with local recipes and ingredients. And I'm already jealous of the big porch in your tent - imagine being able to put bikes inside it!

Thanks for the offer of help. I don't have a site yet. My trip is still at the theoretical stage I'm afraid. Hoping to get going in October. It depends on a building job - converting an old house into apartments. It has to be finished before I can go.

You mentioned a legendary Geman on your site - do you mean Heinz Stucke? There's a man who needs adsense! I bet he could get enough revenue to fund all his travels if he had a site. Instead he carries 30 kg of brochures and postcards about his travels and sells them. The brochure is very good though.

I find lots of big bags very stressful for some reason. I feel really liberated and relaxed living out of a few tiny bags.

Do you think you can get enough income from writing to live on the road long term? That's if you want to of course...maybe you'd like to get home one day and live in a house again?

    There we go...
Nothing exotic, but I love it. An Edinburgh cycles Revolution Country. Changed to flat bars with ends on and the addition of some cheap panniers and thats it. Done a couple of short 3 day tours (coast to coast etc, UK )
Use it daily as my commuter and at the weekends if riding with wife/kids.
Also have a few MTB's, if I could only have the one bike, it would be this one.

All being well, above should be a pic of my audax bike set up for a budget tour (bike, tent, pannier full of porrige) of the West of Scotland a few years ago. I was aiming for Cape Wrath, but a force 6 gale meant that the ferry wasn't running.

Just wanted to say that I found your pic really encouraging!
I'm pretty new to carting significant amounts of gear around on the bike, and every time I have occasion to lift the rear end I do wonder how much more the back wheel can take.
It appears I might be overreacting

I was there in June 2005 on my motorbike (on my way from Bergen to the Nordkapp). Stayed at the campsite at A where I met a Scotland-based Englishman touing the islands by bicycle. Thought he was mad at the time, tackling those hills without an engine!

Lofoten is really a beautiful place - it deeply upset me as a patriotic Scotsman to find somewhere that had nicer scenery that Scotland. To my mind even the Alps don't compare (they were last year's tour)!

Wouldn't fancy it in winter though!
