Aagghh! yet another puncture!!!! Same prob as before. Missed it the first time. Have had both wheels off and removed any sharpe spoke eyelets and have wound rims with electrical tape. (thanks for the tip!).
Apart from that problem my Fury is fab. Looks great with crud catchers and plastered with mud.

Did you put the yellow rim tape back on top of the tape?

Thats what i did and no problems since.

Heh heh, im trying to decide which looks better?

Covered in crud, or shiny polished stealth look.....

    I dunno!

No yellow rim tape on mine. Mine is grey. Did put it back on, though.

That might be one of the reasons they can spec bikes well for their price point,

They source the parts in bulk, build em and hand em over to Halfords who do the advertising, selling and sometimes the support.

I don't think anyone else sells them, but by the same token i dont think Halfords own the brand.

    Someone somewhere's making some cash!

I've seen the 318 u-turn Tora's for around the 140 quid mark....85 - 130mm adjustable travel, lockout and motion control.

There is a solo air version as well, which is around the same price on Wiggle, but its unboxed, i presume OE stock.

Heres another pic of my beauty....

There's a new solo Air version thats about £200ish I think.

    07 Trek?

    100mm Dart 2.5 fork?

They should do, but the thing to be aware of is adding another inch of travel which the upper range of the tora will, (its 130mm fully extended) might upset the bikes geometry a little, could affect the way it rides.

If you don't need the adjustable travel, i'd leave well alone to be honest, 100mm is 4"....would you need anymore with what you use the bike for.

The darts got lockout, preload and damping adjusters...so all your getting for your £140 is a little bit of extra travel.

Big n Daft how come you changed your Crud Catcher to a Topeak Defender? Think the Crud looks so much better, also, put a cable tie around your front hose and attach it to your fork or else it will get caught during a ride....just to be safe

    Never had the Crud matey,

Bought the front and rear defenders, but the front one does'nt fit the crown on the Tora's (grrr whinge moan)

I did have the hose tied down, but took the tie off as i just cleaned it for the pic!

Thanks for that though, reminded me

Sorry Big N Daft it was Mikeitup who had the crud i was looking at the wrong pic! doh! I know what you mean with the front topeak, the adaptor doesnt wind up enough to grip to the fork! Front crud are the best but are a little fiddly to get on! How much do you like the Fury i love mine to bits!!!!

Not yet, but then it's still shop-standard. Watching the upgrade thread with interest. I'm liking the yellow walls on your Panracers... what are the main advantages of those tyres over the Contis it came with? I take it they're the 2.1"?

Yes they are, they are lighter and are kevlar bead plus they are much more responsive than the conti's and they ride well....£40 a pair on merlin

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, sorry I just wanted to vent my frustration with these f-ing wheels.

Ive recently got a Fury, 08 model 2nd hand and the 2nd time out I got a flat on the rear on the inside of the tube, so looked at the rim and the std yellow tape is ok apart from where I got the flat, which is where the spoke is exposed... great work Halfords!! Anyway, ive done 2 laps with some good insulation tape and its alot smoother now.

So, punture repaired, putting the tire on and I catch the f-ing inner tube, another 4 little holes to fix, so fixed those and trying my hardest to put the tire back on, several slips later which produce several big scratches on the rim, and 2 broken tire levels and some help from my GF the tire is back on!!!! Pump it up and it goes flat again!!! aaarrrhhh. I must have caught the tube forcing the tire back on. Now its sitting im my car as I give up and im going to get a LBS to sort it with a new tube as its got 5 patches on it!! Lol

I need to tape the front wheel but I dont want to as its not easy getting the tire on!!

Anyway, vent over. Does anyone know if the tire is the problem with it going on the rim or is the rim to high?

Also, any recommendations on touching up the rim so its black again rather than black with silver stripes?

Gav888 you bought a 2nd hand bike, so the rim tape moving is nothing to do with Halfords.

You need to seat the tyre in the deepest part of the rim well (the centre) which should give you plenty of tyre to work with when refitting them onto a rim

Some tyre/rim combo's are harder than others to fit, washing up liquid helps as a lube to make fitting easier

Your rim will get scratched & dinged from normal riding anyway. If you do want to touch it up, car touch up paint, or a black marker pen.

Thanks for response... I know its not Halfords fault but its so frustrating that its so difficult to put these tyres on compared with my old MTB tire's and my road bike, and I needed to vent at someone.. :)

Didnt think of using washing up liquid as a lube or moving the tyre rim to the centre of the wheel rim. Will give it a go next time I get a flat.....

A mate of mine bought one of these a few months back. They were selling off the last of the 07s from out local Halfords so we got it for only 320euro. I had read up on them beforehand and knew the stock rims and tape were prone to puncturing tubes so the first thing before the bike was ever ridden in anger was to take off the wheels and wrap electrical tape around the rims. I can remember those tyres were an absolute [swear word] to get back on though. Putting the bead to the centre made a difference but they're just a bad combination I think.

On a side note, I've had the bike sitting in my shed for the last 2 months. My mate has only been out twice. He loves MTBing but would be happier if he could do it without leaving the sitting room methinks. I'm going to try buying the bike off him but I don't think he'll sell because he's convinced he's going to use it... Does anybody else know somebody like this?

On the bright side, my wrenching skills have improved as a result of Halfords attention and care when assembling this bike. Issues so far include:
    Cranks not tightened properly.
    The aforementioned rim tape issue.
Stiff links in chain (probably in storage too long)
    Headset too tight.
Gears not adjusted properly (couldn't change gear on the back without spending the next 5 minutes skipping)
Derailleur hanger loose (which aggravated the gears slipping)
Both wheels out of true from new (haven't tackled this yet, might get the LBS to do it).

Coincidentally, just after posting this I went out to find the back tyre flat after the last ride (I've borrowed it so that I can take a few mates out to introduce them to the sport).

So, having patched the tube I can reaffirm that the tyres are near bloody impossible to get off and on. The well in the centre of the rim is very shallow so you can't get enough play to make removal easy.

Was having second thoughts about re-fitting the tube after patching it as it's bulging a bit in that area and I really don't want to put myself through that again if it bursts. But on reflection, it's not my bike yet and I'm not going to give the bugger a free tube if he won't sell it to me

FYI Halfords charge £11 to fit a new tube to one of these wheels.... will give it ago myself next time I get a flat and im going to buy some decent tyre levers.

Would still like to tape the front wheel incase as im off to Thetford the weekend and the last thing I want is a flat!
