Chain has broken on hubbies Saracen mountain bike.

Neither of us are particularly mechanically minded so ...

a) Can you just buy a chain based on the number of rear gears (think it's 7 speed)

b) do we need to buy a chain tool??

c) how easy is it to refit a chain??

Ta muchly,

Lou

correct. the chain is dependant on the number of cogs at the rear.
yes a chain tool will be needed to shorten the chain when fitting.

and also posibly for joining the chain (some have a "powerlink")

the park tools webby has some great how toos. linky below.

If you pop along to your local bike shop I'm sure they would be happy to guide you through the process of splitting and refitting chains.
