Escapist jolly good reads - any of the Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child. Or, maybe, any of the Myron Bolitar series by Harlen Coben. Adequately engaging.
There is also a recent 'true story' book about a couple and their greyhound dog who travelled the canals of England, crossed the Channel and made it across France to The Midi...and it is called - help! Arrrggghh! (Someone will know) Written in a very gentle, humourous style - another holiday winner.
Just read 'Suite Francaise' and now started The Kite Runner, but I wouldn't fancy reading either on holiday - too much concentration for me!

A stand alone fantastic read - Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follett

If you like Tolkein - try Robert Jordan Wheel of Time series. Also in that neck of the woods (but no goblins and elves, no magic) I'm currently reading through the George RR Martin series - A Song of Fire and Ice - Starting with "A Game of Thrones" which is excellent!

Otherwise - I love the Sherlock Holmes books - but they're pretty short..... And Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus....

Possibly not everyone's cup of tea but Orwell's 'Homage to Catalonia' was pretty rivetting for me.

Indeed, evocative of a different era and a great reminder of Orwell's journalistic skills.

'The Ride'r by Tim Krabbe is a great short read.

Definitely - would highly recommend it if you're at all interested in racing. The best cycling book I've read.

I highly recommend as a good fun holiday read, either The Big Over Easy or The Fourth Bear by Jasper FForde.

the Tom Simpson Biography - Put me back on my Bike

excellent read and really gave me an insight into how important a figure Simpson was to the cycling world and SHOULD have been to the British public.
