I'm off to Morzine on the 8th of August and I'm looking for a bike bag to take on the plane. Does anyone have any recommendations on which bag to buy and whether its worth paying the extra for a hard case? Any advice would be appreciated.

Figured i'd answer this being as it's reached page 3 with no answers.
A lot of LBS' rent bike bags/boxes, that might be a good route to try before buying one.
If you're flying i'd recommend a hard case, the amount of stories i've heard from people who have arrived at their destination with broken bikes it's probably worth the extra cash.

  • thanks for the response, I'll try my LBS as hiring does seem a better option than forking out over £150 for a case.

just returned from alps using the DHB bag with wheel bags from wiggle (£75 i think). I stuck a couple of extra karrimats in there as well, and wrapped clothes and pipe insulation foam around the frame / calipers / chainset etc. No probs at all from Edinburgh to geneva and back......but i saw how they chuck the luggage around!!! Scary!

I can reccommend the bag though. Hard cases look better for protection but are too heavy really.

On-one do some nice cheap bags, I got mine for £45 and its brilliant. Make sure you space out front forks and rear triagle so the structure cant be crushed while the wheel isnt in there

The Tardis from www.groundeffect.co.nz is very good. Its reasonable value and it makes a surprisingly compact package which is handy these days as airlines are getting more and more picky about luggage.
