Best £1K hardtail?

Can anyone help me?
My work have just joined 'cylcescheme' which allows employees to get a huge reduction on new bikes. They've set the ceiling at £1k and the bike has to be purchased from a local shop (Bristol in my case).
I ride xc trails and little else(Ashton Court, Cwm Carn, Afan Forest etc), but don't really have any idea what the best bike is for the job at the £1k range (because I wouldn't be able to afford one if it wasn't for the scheme).
Cheers

So you are looking for an XC/Trail hardtail with an RRP of around £1000?
The bike that springs to mind is the Marin Rocky Ridge. Excellent spec and ride qualities. Perfect for what you need. You could also check out the Saracen Zen 3. A similar spec but a bit more of an aggressive ride. Very stiff rear end.0 -
Orange P7 of course. Make sure you get a test ride.Commencal Meta 5.5.1

http://www.boardmanbikes.com/ check out the "Mountain Pro" has RS Reba Race forks, Sram X9 / X0 gearing, triple butted frame, stylo GXP cranks, Avid Juicy 7s ........... very light has sorted geometry.0

I bought a Marin Rocky Ridge on the same scheme at my work.
Fantastic bike! ive commuted on it everyday since christmas, thrashed it nearly every lunch on the local trials and at weekends. Its still sweet as.
The Fox Fork is amazing very plush. SRAM x5 shifters not top of the range but have been great, SRAM x9 derailiur is good a very solid / meaningful shift. Hayes HFX 9s great stopping power.
My only downside would be it having only 2 chainrings, depending on your riding style adding a third may be required.0 -

I recently had a similar dilemma. :?
Have a look at Merlin cycles and the Rock Lobster Team Tig SL.
£975 with superb spec, full XT, easton stem, bars and seatpost, Hope Mono Mini brakes, Marzocci MX Pro forks.
You won't find better for the price.
You need to get yourself to Leyland in Lancashire to test it though!
I got mine 2 weeks ago and it is absolutely superb. It looks the dogs too!0 -
Why does no-one ever suggest the Orange Evo8 in these kinda posts ...... just wondering

I too have a rock lobster and am loving it. It won hardtail of the year in 2006 if I remember rightly.
I\'m pushing the pedals on my season cycle0 -
can get a rather tasty Merlin Malt 4 + upgrades for £10000

Cove Stiffee, Santa Cruz Chameleon, Pace RC303
build it yourself!Mark0 -
Trek 8000 - no question. Most of the other big manufacturers skimp on the bits you don't notice (front gear, hubs, chain etc). I have a Trek 8500 and every component on it is well specced - it says an XT group and you get an XT group.
My brothers Stumpy pro on the other hand has an upgraded XTR rear gear, and a severely downgraded Deore front gear and brake set for only £50 more than my Trek.0 -
Ok...where is the suggestion of the Specialized Rockhopper Pro. I love mine. Such a good ride.0
