FSA crown race/Fox F100 RL

HI all, I currently have a FSA MX Orbit headset on my Marin, recently I ordered a Chris King headset and took it to my LBS to have it fitted. When I went to collect it he said that he couldn't change it because the crown race was pushed flush to my Fox forks and that he couldnt apply any leverage without f+ing up my forks/there was no ridge/lip. He said that he could see if there was a special tool that may be needed.
Went back and he said the tool cost £250 or something, he also said he had never encountered this problem before. I told him not to waste the money just for me and I would try somewhere else
I then tried another shop and they said the same, so WTF is the story here? I mean we are talking top componentry here and Fox and FSA are common place in the market.
Has anyone else had any experience with this - all I want is the bloody headset changed!
