I had a look at 1 in halfords the other day, i lifted it up from the rack and it seemed quite heavy to me, heavy 1400 quids worth. It may have dura ace shifters etc but you can get an ultegra equipped planet x just now for a grand which is a considerably lighter bike with you're own selection of bits, cranks, length, stem length etc etc

well said, the boardman is way overpriced. avoid!

I agree about the bikes but that computer with the altimeter calls to me! How many times have I been out with my mates and we have said, well we didn't do many miles but by God we must have climbed some serious height. This could be the ultimate BS detector, anybody know who makes it for Hal--Chris? I wouldn't expect it to be that accurate but it could be a reminder your favourite hill is not the Galibier.

Halfords staff do not inspire confidence and I certainly wouldn’t buy a bike from them. I recently went into the local one on to try to find a circlip to replace one that I lost while doing some work on my car. I went to the parts desk and enquired if they had any. The dopy teenage girl behind the counter stares at me blankly. Her manager then comes over and says 'of course we have these, what size to you need ?' and produces a selection of hose-clips ! I patiently explain what a circlip is and he clearly has no idea what I'm talking about. I start to get annoyed when he tells me that they are obviously an obscure item and not much used in cars. He seems even more perplexed when I go over to the tool section and show him a pair of Halfords circlip pliers!
Fortunately another car parts place was close by and seemed to have no trouble in supplying me with the obscure part.
They do have a good selection of furry dice though.....

I've just read an add in Pro Cycling, and it says '18 - speed Dura Ace'.

OK, it's Dura Ace, but 18 speed? Is this correct? Presumably if you buy a bike with DA on, you want a 10S block - it's not exactly new-fangled now!

I suppose it's all about making bucks, but I think it's abit of a shame that Boardman's gone down the Halfrauds route. If he'd have done a Museeuw/Mercx/Lemond kinda thing, surely he would have still been able to have agood range of road bikes available in the LBS - none of those guys are exactly skint, I'm sure. I haven't ridden one, but I'd smell a rat of a bike's £1400 with Dura-Ace - 18s or not.

Merckx has his own factory in Belgium, and very nice his bikes look too.

Trek make bikes for Lemond (although I bet Lemond regrets sigining up with them now  ) , with the alu models probably built by Giant for Trek.

Billato does the bikes for Museew if i remember correctly.

The Boardman bikes are probably designed by Dolan, and manufactured by one of the big three Taiwanese companies. So probably more like Lemond than anything else.

Boggo halfrauds staff i'd agree are shockingly bad but the bikehut staff are generally pretty good. I dont really have a LBS thats isnt 10 miles away and i do have a bike hut thats 500yrds away and when i have used them they have alwasy known what i needed and been prepared to go the extra mile. I've even had them fix bits of my bike FOC when all i did was take the bike in to point out the bit that i needed..

You ever stop to think it felt heavy cause of that big f8ck off lock that was also hanging off the bike frame (so people couldnt steal it???).

From what Ive heard the bikes are designed by roadbike is designed by Boardman while the mountain bikes are designed by someone else.

Still, Im enjoying my Boardman bike...dont have any complaints about the bike BUT dont get me started on the monkeys I ran across (would like that to be "over" instead :)) at Halfords!

Er...I hate to p*ss on Boardman's fireworks...but he's not exactly pouring on the bling and the glamour is he? I've never seen a better attempt to capture the elusive 'cool' of a geography teacher. The sales proposition seems to be 'go to the shop with the worst reputation in the trade, come out with a bunch of four year old components which you will need to reassemble, AND look a complete dork, just like me." Thanks, Chris. Don't give up the day job.

Have to agree that Chris seems to have more than enough savvy to ensure the range got a free plug

Hardly savvy - the whole TDF on ITV 4 was sponsored by Bikehut at Halfords. It was probably part of the TV deal as it was around the time of them being launched

On the first highlights show the Boardman branding was clear to see, subsequently it was taped over, as in the pic above. UK TV companies are obliged by the rules to keep advertising and programme content seperate.

I dont think the Boardman logo has been taped over in that pic as you can still see the outline of the logo (a better quality image may clarify it though?).

Except that that would have been in breach of OFCOM guidelines about product placement: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/complain/ads/sponsorship/

Which would also explain why they taped over the branding/used an unbranded bike more often than not. And why Gary Imlach made running joke of it every time they did the competition bit of the programme.

perhaps this as been mentioned before, but at a local halfords today looking at the new boardman bikes and i was told the mountain bikes frames are made at the kona factory.
i was also told by one of the more experienced staff that if i want overshoes to try the local garden centre ( scary or what )

They might be made in the same factory as the Konas, but Kona don't own the factory or the tools that make their bikes. As with most brands.

Don't knock em till you've tried em, you say you can get much better spec for the price but, for example, the Boardman Comp road bike has tiagra groupset, truvativ compact chainset and Ritchey Comp wheels and a carbon fork with alu steerer, the spesh allez is £100 less and has sora and cheaper wheels.
The giant scr2 has same groupset, is £50 cheaper but inferior wheelset and worse welding (thats based only on looking at the pics in front of me :))

That's equal to or better than many bikes in the same price range.

And with regards to not trusting cheap bikes with dura ace parts, Focus do a racer for about £1300 that has full dura ace and got a 9/10 in a C+ review.

(Also the 18 speed dura ace must be a typo as in the Boardman catalogue it says 20 speed dura ace, triple butted frame with carbon rear stays + monocoque fork, Truvativ Rouleur carbon chainset, Ritchey WCS wheelset. TBH for the price that again looks pretty decent)

I can knock them without trying them out - they've got Shimano!!

    'nuff said!!
