Cracking up Rapidfire Shifter (Deore)

Hello everybody. I've got a new problem with my '05 Cinder Cone that you might be able to help with.
The last time I rode it the right-hand downshifter (the big one on the bottom) was a bit wobbly at first and got progressively worse on my commute home. When I finally got home I turned the bike on it's side to examine the shifter more closely. The bottom lever (and the bottom of the shifter body was loose and had come out a bit but was still stuck in the main body of the shifter. I tried to push it back into the body but it wouldn't go, so I tried moving it out a bit to see if I could then push it back in. Unfortunately the entire bottom lever and bottom of the shifter popped out of the main body, along with a circular spring (like a watch spring).
Now I know I've probably screwed it right up anyway but I thought it might be worth asking if anyone has had any luck fixing this problem, and if so how do I do it. Otherwise what should I replace it with - I was thinking XT but will they really be that much more durable? And how well does SRAM compare to Shimano (I've never used SRAM componentry). The current shifters are Deore and they operate a Deore front and Deore LX derailleurs. Thanks!

Sounds quite complicated- taking it to a bikeshop might be an idea, however on the SRAM vs Shimano topic have a look at this post

I think it's thoroughly French Connectioned myself, but I thought if I could avoid buying something new my bank balance would thank me. Oh well.0

Replace it!
What you replace it with is up to you. Why not replace with Deore? Nothing wrong with them and shifters are a compnent that is prone to crash damage. If you're running a 9-speed transmission you can get a right hand M511 shifter from CRC for 15 quid.
On the other hand, if you can repair the original I'll buy you a pint.0 -
You probably lost the bottom nut that holds all the parts together. If you can find an identical nut, and if you're patient enough you can reassemble it.0

Yeah, I think I just need to bite the bullet and get a new one, it's just that I hate things not being easily repairable. Damn this disposable culture.
Anyway, I was thinking that if I was buying a new shifter anyway I may as well upgrade to something that performs better and won't fall apart. I mean I've fallen off a few times but I've never hit the actual shifter with anything and it still fell apart. I'd rather have a bomb-proof shifter that will last for ages instead of something cheaper that will fall apart after a couple of years. So are XT shifters rock-hard or just a tarted-up Deore or LX shifter?0 -
Wot Rocha said: there's just a little screw which goes in the bottom and holds the thing together; other than that it's a stack of bits and the Shimano website has exploded diagrams. I've had these units apart - if you're patient, they're not too tricky.
