Broken Leg

I've currently got a broken leg but should be getting the cast removed in the next couple of weeks. The problem is, i've been in a cast for 10 weeks and the muscles in my leg have wasted away to almost nothing. Anyone else been in this position and know any good exercises to strengthen the muscles?

Cheers

p.s. the break was just above the ankle so i'm looking for exercises to develop the lower part of my leg!

TBH they should refer you on to a physio when the cast comes off coz you are definitely gonna need it and they will give you a personalised exercise programme. Let them know that you are normally very active, cycle and are motivated to get back on the bike asap and they will give you more of their time. There is nothing worse for physios than patients who can't be arsed and ignore their advice so a keen motivated patient is a joy. I had a quick look around t'interweb and found a few bits and bobs but as I say you should get referred onto a physio and if you don't, ask your orthopaedic surgeon to do it, giving the same reasons as stated above.

Found this, which looks quite sensible:

You would need to build these exercises up over a reasonable period though otherwise you'll just re-injure it and for the standing ones take it very slow at first and make sure there is a desk or similar to hold onto at first. This might help as well:

i fractured the talus bone in my ankle in march,i found the physio exercise good as long as you stick at them.i have found swimming to help a lot.the doc at hospital advised me to keep off my mountain bike off road, but he said going on my road bike would help recovery,i have been back on the bike for the last 3 weeks and i'm starting to feel stronger again and feel going back on bike is helping.so it my feel a long time when you are off your bike but it does feel good when you get back on it.

The cast finally came off today after 2 and half months and i'm really looking forward to getting back on the bike again!!! Not gonna rush into anything too quick though as I couldn't bear any more time injured.

Now all I need to do is look at the losing weight thread as i've put a stone and a half on :(
