Yo, im looking for a bike that cope with some extreme XC, like jumps drop offs, some light freeride. Ive got a budjet of 500 quid, i would prefer disc brakes (im trying to avoid cable discs if possible) and a fork with 120mm+ travel.

if uve got any suggestions please go ahead and post em

thank, Craig

Specialized Hardrocks can take frankly ridiculous amounts of abuse considering the cost.

Also browse secondhand, should be able to get some crackers for that much.
  • yeah they sound good but id prefer something with a little more travel

If you have a bike at the moment it could be worth picking up a frame + fork and swapping over the parts. You could pick up something like a Dialled Bikes Prince Albert for £250 and a Marzocchi Z1 Sport RCV for £170 on Merlincycles. That leaves you £80 to pick up a new wheel with a 20mm front hub.
    S-works Stumpjumper FSR

I'll see you at the end.

You'll see me on the floor.
  • my bike at the moment is duffed tht why im getting a new one, the cranks etc are hammered and bent, does anyone know if the saracen mantra 3 is any good?

I would absolutely buy second hand at this price range. You will get a £1000 bike that's perhaps not been ridden much with some really good parts on it that can be easily serviced rather than replaced should the need arise.

Buy a £500 new hardcore xc bike and you will quickly get fed up of dull forks, bent wheels and shonky brakes.

You could have a look at the Carrera Fury ( What Mountain BikeGold Award in July 2007 issue, btw).
it was tested against a Saracen Mantra amongst others.
It has Rock Shox Tora forks and decent gears and hydraulic brakes.
They are on sale at Halfords at the moment, £449 instead of £499.

    Just my 2 pennorth. :)

A friend's got a Saracen Mantra 3 and loves it. If there's any way you can stretch to £650 (or cheaper online) the Zen 1 is a wicked bike
