Do you find these are the most dangerous type of pedal you can have on your bike?

I had flats on my mountain bike until friday when i changed them to toe clips i had lying around in my house. But i think i'll be changing my pedals to my SPDs even though they are worth £30 more than the bike because the toe clips feel too dangerous and take my mind off the road getting my foot into the toe clip!

anyone else got any thoughts?

Oh i'm on my shitty mountain bike and not my road bike because my Cannondale is still waiting for repair from the accident so this is recuperation cycles

Never had any probs with toe clips, I can't face the thought of changing my shoes every time I want to use my bike.

I use toe clips but keep the straps very loose. This allows easy entry/exit but you still get some of the benefit on the up stroke. I've never yet tightened then during riding - a far to scary concept.

I used to have toeclips many years ago, I had them loose enough so that I could get my feet out in an emergency but tight enough so that my feet didn't keep slipping out.

When I started riding, you didn't have a choice, so learning how to use toeclips was almost an initiation rite. When the first Look pedals came out in the 1980s, it was a revelation.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

I am a beginner cycling commuting for 2 years, I recently changed from toe clips to powergrips to Time Atac. The atac pedals are amazing, so much easier to get into.

Anyone here remember tightening their top straps down onto their cleated shoes?Definitely couldn't get off the pedals when that was done properly!

Toe Clips bring back some memories. I remember first trying them out and falling unable to get my feet out, then came the SPD's and the same happened. Probably best to wear them a little loose.

Like Kev, - I got straps with my new Giant SCR2, takes getting used to. I keep them a little loose and always remember to slip out of them when I gat home. (I pulled one out one t swung my leg over to dismount but my other foot was still strapped in - nearly had a major embarrasment.

Try SPD's and you'll never look back.

If you insist upon toe clips, I imagine that flat-soled shoes (rather than ones with big, chunky grips) will make it easier to get your feet in and out.

yes, I think toe clips are the most dangerous, especially if you tighten them, if you don't then they function less well. Also, there is the hassle of flipping the pedals. SPD's are much easier and therefore safer IMHO.

went out today with my SPDs on my bike, my bike that cost £10 has got £150 worth of accessories on it! I am NEVER EVER using toe clips ever again, they are the most dangerous things ever. I didn't buy my SPDs specially i took them off my broken bike

I use SPDs on my road bike and have had no problems.

On my MTB I have flats with the plastic cup things on the front, I'm happier with this because I have to jump off in a hurry sometimes!

Yep - i learnt to ride with them when I was about 8 or 9. Not a problem until emergency stops, then I just found that I could collapse against my dad wilst I bent down to undo one! These new cyclists with clip in pedals don't know their born..........
