Despite all the fuss about the TdF in the UK, I hope no one forgets the Giro Donne is also taking place this coming week in Italy, 9 days in all. The prologue was on Friday, there was a ca. 100 mile stage today.
As it attracts more of the better female riders than the TdF Feminine in France, it's nowadays considered the most prestigious stage race for women.

Nicole Cooke won the it 2-3 years ago, but this year she will be hard pressed to win again for, unlike in the TdF Feminine (which she recently won), she’ll be competing against the best Russian, American, Italian and German teams, one of which includes Lithuanian Edita Pucinskaite, last year’s Giro winner and who is also in the lead after today’s stage (Saturday 7 July).

The event has sufficient interest and standing in Italy that a couple of next week’s midweek crucial stages will be broadcast live on one of the main Italian TV channels.
