Has anyone been through a few sets of avid pads and recommend some which have good life without impeding stopping power?

The ones that came with the bike only seem to have managed 60miles or so.

    which avids?

you have got something set up poorly, or you dont know byour miles.

if you want a change try EBC or goodridge.

I thought that the front pads had worn down because the lever movement on the front was much greater than the rear and a grating noise was made on applying them.

But on closer inspection, they've not worn out, and taking them out and giving them a clean they no longer make the grating noise. However, the front brake lever travel still seems quite large.

Given juicy 5's have no pad movement adjuster is there anything I can do about this?

adjust the lever reach adjuster. look inside the lever at the point that pushes on the rod that pushes on the master cylinder.

might be an idea to read the manual. they are downloadable now.
