Strange vibrations...

Hey all,

I've got a couple of questions about a bike I bought recently. I thought I'd post here before taking it to my LBS so as not to make a fool of myself!

The first thing is, the middle cog (excuse my terms) at the front appears to have a kink in it. I only noticed it because it started rubbing against the front mech. Im not sure if it's a defect or whether it's there to help the chain onto the cog. Its raised inwards slightly towards the small cog at and spans 1 or 2 teeth.

The second thing is, I can feel weird vibrations through the pedals when I ride. It's almost like a grinding or a clicking except there's no sound, it's just something I can feel. I didnt have this on my old bike. I'm pretty sure it's not meant to be there, but I wanted to check to see (a) if I should take it back to the shop and (b) if anyone knows what it might be.

Any help or advice much appreciated. If you haven't guessed, I'm not the most experience bike mechanic! (Im not one at all)

Cheers

Russ

    Hey,

Pedals often frind after breaking in, particularly with less expensive ones, easily solved by taking it to pieces and cleaning them then re-greasing them and putting them back together. As for the middle chainring, the kinks are probably to help shifting and the chain rub is most likely a result of cable stretch. All of the above assumes this is a fairly new bike though.

some cranks have rings that are shaped to aid shifting while others have ramps and pins.

just explain to the shop your issues.

  • thanks for the tips guys. I'll take apart my pedals when I get a chance, hopefully that'll cure it. The bike is very new, 3 weeks old.
  • Hello again.

Spot on with the pedal diagnosis, I took them off and twisted them in my hands and one is extremely loose and rattling, the other is extremely tight and grinding. I managed to get the nut off from inside but there's a second nut which I dont have the tools to remove. Since the bike is so new im gonna take the pedals in and get them to sort it out.

    Cheers for the help!
