I think police in the Midlands were riding Chameleons a couple of years back too, I saw a mini feature in MBUK about it.
Maybe they've upgraded to V-10s by nowDave S0 -
saw 2 police on bikes the other day and they would have no chance of catching any 1 on them. both were strugling to ride straight for any length of time0

About time them fat useless tarts got some exercise. Only thing is, they will probably be more useless on bikes than in cars or on foot !!
I take it they are for use in city centres, where most shoplifters go on foot .... how are the police gonna use bikes ?
If they catch the crim up , by the time they have dismounted , he will be another 20 feet away and running.
lots of burglars round here use mountain bikes, and no-one is gonna catch em if they know where to go... you may as well put coppers on segways0 -
XT cranks on them aswell.... blimey, what a waste of taxpayers money...
I know there are a few police bikes with rohloff speedhubs aswell...
I've always secretly dreamed of being a cop on a bike *i'd do a much better job than them*.........................

Police in London have been riding Santa Cruz Chamelons and Specialized Stumpjumpers for over 5 years
the bikes have to have tough kit on them as the Police do alot of mileage every week and carry a heavy load on the bikes
most of the bikes are equipped with Shimano Deore XT drivetrains and hydraulic disc brakes
having been ticketed twice by Police in the City of London, i can assure you they are not slow on their bikes :oops:check out my riding - www.robcole.co.uk Banshee Factory Team rider, Da Kine UK Team rider, www.freeborn.co.uk www.eshershore.com0 -

that's a real naive and stupid quote.
For your info, I'm a cycle cop and at a manly 18 stone & 6ft3ins tall I ride approximately 20 miles an 8 hour shift.
I don't work in a city centre, but I cover a district that encompasses two town area that have sprawled into each other will a mingled village. Seperating these 3 places are 3 major hills, one about 300 metres distance to ride and a 12% incline, another 1/2 mile along with a 10% incline and the last one being about 1/4 mile long with a 8% incline.
I also do downhilling, trials riding, dirt jumping and I am now working with the local council to build a freeride park for the kiddly winks with nowt to do. I also went to Les Gets with my mates and was the fastest rider each time.
Using the police bikes, I have had about 10 arrests for drug offences, 4 for shop lifting, 3 cars seized for no insurance, and numerous "prevention" incidents involving the more interesting parts of society.
And what bike do I use? Well instead of the Smith and Wessons (which are imported from USA) I use a standard hardtail Dawes XC bike thats about 4 years old.
don't tar everyone with the same brush, there are cops out there that do the job and do the job well. What you gotta remember is that each day is cycle training day where I incorporate as much skill into tackling stairs, terrain, drops and climbs as possible to dial my out of work balls out fun.
So all in all your so, so wrong.Too enthusiastic about biking for my friends...want to ride somewhere in the SE? TELL ME!!! hamsterscanswim@hotmail.com - and yes they can!0 -
That where our taxes are going. :x
As soon as one of them goes down and the copper goes on foot some one will lift it. Plenty of decent mid range treaders out there that would suffice for what they want them for.
By the way if you have a car broken into and £2000 quids worth of gear stolen etc or indeed a £2000 car stolen is it any difference to a £2000 bike being stolen. Not enough emphasis on the bike crime in this country for me. IMOMe http://www.flickr.com/photos/8779009@N03/622132744/

According to the article they're on bike so they can sniff out weed which they might miss in a police car!0

Geez, that 2.5 miles per hour you average really must take it out of you... I struggle to see what your "manly" physique has to do with this topic.
If we're going to have police forces riding bikes, then they certainly shouldn't be riding anything costing over £500 in my opinion. For a start, I seriously doubt that the majority of them have the riding ability to justify having an even semi-decent bike, and for those that do, it's a ridiculous waste of tax payers money.0 -
would you rather they were put on apollos??! yea, they would save millions in the first week, then they would break and have to be replaced!
pinkbike
0

I would certainly fancy my chances against any policeman on a bike.___________________________________________________________

hmm.. bike police are on the increase. I've seen quite a few of them round here recently.0
-
It is a good idea though, must make it easier to get round the estates which can have alot of alleyways in them.
They'll have to make sure they lock them to a lamp-post while they go in the chippy thoughDave S0 -

i've heard there's some on the isle of wight but i've not seen any yet, i think cops on bikes is a good thing but i thought they had blue lights and a siren?0
-
I've seen a paramedic bike in Leeds too, but I was too slow to get a pic!0
-
I'm wondering if they have flashing blue lights and sirens on them
I don't have a problem with the police having good kit, as long as it helps catch more crimo's and doesn't fall to bits after 5 minutes. I think it's an especially good idea for patrolling chav plagued council estates...very quiet approach eh.
Don't they have police on roller blades in the US?0 -
I beleive that is in the Netherelands Red Panda.0
