Are Langster brakes as bad as they appear?

Got home after my second ride of my Langsterr and its first ride in the wet, and the brakes pads left a terrible black sludge along the rim. My Crossroads never did that and my Squadra certainly hasn't.

Are they just rubbish? What should I change to?

I've already upgraded the seat, tyres and pedals... although must say that it's a hell of a lot of fun to ride so not complaining just looking for advice on the brakes from other Langster users or advice on brakes blocks generally.

I upgraded my basic Allez brakes to Shimano 105's, cant say I notice any performance diference and the 105s are slightly heavier! They look nice though

No problem with them, and I don't think that they give off any more sludge than other brake blocks at that price point.

I guess it's just a long time since I cycled in thhe rain

My LBS sold me Shimano brake blocks as replacement for the Tektro brakes on my Langster and they seem fine to me but I do find the brakes a bit crude and poorly engineered compared to the Campag Chorus and Shimano RX 600 on my race and Audax bikes. I think my next upgrade will be the Langster wheels, I too have changed saddle tyres, pedals also bars and levers.

Thanks - will see about upgrading the brake blocks for now

Can wait for the wheels... I've only had it ten days

Although cycling over the downs was a bad idea to get to my TDF place in Mereworth
