Modding on Bikeradar

There are the User Mods from (presumably) MBUK et al. There is the (I assume) generic Admin1 mod login from C+.
Could someone confirm what guidelines you are operating to and how you divide the board amongst yourselves.

still learning. and we all get the flags. to see who is currently able to mod sections look below the topic heading if it says moderators click that. All Admins can do anything. who they are sorry no idea. except for a few. but they will most likly be future people.

and i should have said why?

Nicklouse --> "and i should have said why?"

Because people have different modding styles. What might work for a mod at MBUK might well not work for someone modding the C+ areas of this board and vice versa. We've already seen some fairly fundamental humour/attitude clashes between members. Given that the MBUK mods are users too I think it's only fair to ask what guidelines you are following. We had user mods (briefly) on C+ and they understood the board and what it, as a community, found acceptable.
You guys run the board and we're entitled to ask questions of you.

I have to say I'm a little concerned that all the mods apparently come from the MTB board. This severely limits the capacity for taking into account the different cultures of the boards. I've already managed to get into an argument with a mod because he didn't understand what Soapbox is for. There seems to be a real risk of a user being moderated unnecessarily just because the mods don't get it.

  • I was an admin on the Cycling Plus forum, though that forum was moderated lightly - we only stepped in when something was flagged.

We should apply the same rule to the road area here.

Yes, but the point I'm making John is that if we have a bunch of MBUK users who also don't understand the C+ humour and they start flagging things they consider inappropriate, even though it's just a difference in culture, and an MBUK mod steps in and moderates on the basis of that flag, then it could be unfair to the C+ers.

I do get the feeling that the MBUK board has been given top dog status here, and I'm wondering why.

    It hasn't.

"if..." So far, the only situation along those lines that I have seen involved exactly the reverse. I'd have let it stand as it was rather black in its humour, but funny as hell.

Rather than worrying about imaginary priorities and theoreticals, we'd all be better off talking to each other.

Sam if i can throw in my 1Sek (about 70p) i would not say that MBUK (and what mtb) has been given top dog position but MBUK is a bigg problem.

mbuk had twice the members of C+ even if C+ had more posts.

then again the forum has only been "live" for 4 days (well 3 and a bit) and only 2 days have been work days.

And yes the Modding on MBUK was very different to C+ as the Mod/Admins were members of the forum first and were then asked to help out with the conyrolling of the Kids who would come on during IT classes at school and cause chaos on the forum.

i have had a few fun phone calls to IT managers at the odd school. Only when their contact mails do not work.

also please note Mods can not ban on this site. we can only delete or move, which we are currently doing acording to the rules of Our forum as We have not recived any guideline regarding This foum even though were were told we would.

Quote someone "We intend to brief you all when the site is live." still waiting.

I'm gonna be really light on the moderating until I get my head round the different cultures, and how the forum works. I'm told I'm staying a mod, but I've not tested it yet (I only got on it for the first time an hour or so ago).

On MBUK, i tended to move stupid posts to the sandbox. These were ones where the topic title was 'help' or all in caps, or otherwise not related to the body of the message.

Double posts I tend to delete both of unless it looks like a genuine mistake.

The sandbox was basically the unmoderated bit of the MBUK forum. It used to be where the timewasting threads went ('word association', 'post a link to your screenshot', 'copy and paste' etc.) but of late it's mostly descended into contests to see who can be the most offensive.

Personally, I'm going to tend towards the lenient for the next few weeks, see how people expect things to work, and try to keep them working that way. It's going to be messy, but I'm not sure there's a clean way to do it - forums are very cliquey by nature.

FWIW, I've written this as a general guide to forum usage. I try to moderate in accordance with it:
