Kona hardtails have phenomenal handling but the complete bikes are usually let down a little by a fork that's a bit below what you'd expect at the price point.

A Caldera, Hoss or Kula (there are several Kula frames made of different materials) would be an excellent frame to build a bike around, if you're interested in custom building.

How much do you want to spend?

Edit: And yes, I definitely recommend getting a hardtail. I have a 2004 Kona Fire Mountain. It's mainly stock, I've just been replacing bits as they wear out. For the past two years I've had a full susser, and I still love riding the Fire Mountain. It never gets boring.

Santa Cruz Chameleon is a really good HT frame if you are interested in the rougher styles of riding.

Dialled Prince Albert is a tough chuckable but responsive frame and looks the part (in my eyes!). They are quite cheap and the geommetry is fun. Build with some good wheels a phat heavy rubber and they just do anything you ask of them
