Anyone play the saxophone?

Ever since my mum thought I should learn to play the Clarinet when I was a kid, I've wanted to play the Saxophone. It's the same , but far cooler. To be fair to her, it wasn't her fault there was no saxophone teacher at the school, although you'd think a Clarinet teacher would be able to play the sax...
Anyway, I'm thinking of getting an Alto sax. Anyone got any recommendations of good entry level saxophones? Is it worth buying second hand to get a higher quality instrument?

Hi
I play the saxophone. I've got my old beginner one about that you could maybe have a spin on if you wanted?
Generally, yes it's worth going second hand for a better instrument. After all, if you progress, you will be upgrading anyway. Having a better instrument puts off the upgrade for a while. Check the condition of the instrument first though. Servicing it can do wonders.
My beginner sax was an Arbiter, £500 back in the day, 9 years ago. Jupiter also make beginner instruments I believe.0 -
They do. But they are cheap, and suitable for a beginner, as beginners need to learn embouchure and the note fingerings. As a beginner, tone and feel isn't the most important thing. Plus they are cheap, so then it doesn't matter so much if they are played 3 times then left in the box.0

pfffft! I have a jupiter saxophone. I think it was about £350 when I bought it seven years ago. No problems with it at all, and it sounds good and is really easy to get all the notes out of. I tried a few yamahas and at the time, I didnt think they played as well. I was reccomended the jupiter by my at the time clarinet teacher. (I swaped for the same reason, clarinets are for pansies). I'd advise you to do the same. I'm currently working towards grade 6 on it.0

I think your saxophone section could just be a bit crap0

Thanks for the replies.
Rory: I've got a few friends who used to play the Sax, so I'll just nick one of theirs to give it a try. I'll be rusty as hell when it comes to the whole embrochure thing, but it can't be THAT different from the clarinet, so I should pick it up reasonably quickly. It's not like I'm going over to brass or something
I'm thinking I might do one of those hire schemes that some shops seem to do, where you hire it for a few months, then if you don't want it, you just give it back, but if you do want it, you just pay the balance. The Yamaha 275 seems to be a fairly popular choice...0 -

I'm sorry, but is 'playing the saxaphone' a metaphor for something else?0 -
I play saxophone and trombone, in classical, jazz and ska bands. Learn trombone. It's okay, does damage your embouchure a bit though. And yeah, I learnt clarinet before saxophone. The embouchure to me feels pretty much the same, just a bit bigger.
Personally, now, I enjoy playing trombone more than saxophone.0 -

I play the French Horn so I got to hear directors complain about the saxes making us sound bad
You can play MY French Horn [/The Todd]0
