Complete strip down and rebuild...

I've been using a Claude butler Alpina fitted with slicks as a road bike but now that i have purchased a "proper"road bike i am considering stripping the Alpina down and rebuilding it.
I'll probably replace various parts along the way with higher spec components.
Obviously if I just wanted an bike upgrade I should probably buy a better bike. But I want to treat this as a project.
Having raced mothercycles for many years i am pretty handy with a set of spanners and a lump hammer so is it practical to think that i can strip and rebuild this bike??
