I went into a branch of Evans last night to help my friend buy a mountain bike (and various accessories) there and then in cash, no messing. It was pouring down with rain, so there weren't that many customers inside but it still took 10min before anyone could be bothered to serve us as they were to interested lugging bikes around the place.

Then, to make the situation more laughable, the guy who served me was about as motivated and enthusiastic as a slug, and paid more attention to his hair than he did to my friend and the bikes.

If it wasn't for the fact I was there, found the perfect bike and persuaded my friend that it was the right one they would have definitely lost a sale! Not that the salesman would have been bothered!

Easy solution to it all I guess! Put them all on performance related pay! That'd get them moving!

I was in Evans last weekend actually trying to buy my first ever clipless shoes and pedals. Went up to a sales lad (admittedly he looked about 17) and asked to try on all their clipless shoes in a size 5. He mumbled quite a lot, mostly about road shoes despite the fact that i'd already said i want MTb shoes for riding trails, then went and looked in the back room and came out with NOTHING. Nothing! Mumbled something about specialized being a smaller fit than usual. So i almost had to push him back in to get the smallest shoes they had in stock. Tried on two diff models one of which fitted ok, but i wasn't too sure. No fitting advice offered at all.

Went to Edinburgh bike co op the same afternoon and had a very helpful sales guy do a proper fitting telling me how they should fit/feel and ended going with the very same ones i'd ummed about in Evans. So they definetly lost a sale.

I had no problem when I bought my bike from them, the guy I talked to was very helpful
The guy who fetched helmets for me to try on another time was also helpful, and rather patient as well

So is Evans a poor show company then?

Never used them as yet but was thinking of visiting one of their shops this weekend.

But then again i have just been on the Edinburgh co op website & some of the bikes are like £60 cheaper........hmmm dodgey
Arrrghhh it's worse than i thought!!!!!

the warranty service i recieved from them was appaling. They took an age to sort the problem out, and took around 4 days on average to reply to me, each time i enquired about the progress of the warranty claim

I have found Evans' to be rather poor. I was badly advised on the bike I bought and they sold me something online that wasn't in stock. They still havn't returned my money and this was about one month ago.

They will never have my custom again. Unless I need to try on things so I can then buy them elsewhere online ;)

The one i went to the guys are all pretty helpful, test rode the trek ex8 and stumpy and they set them both up just to my liking so i could have a quick test ride.

Get this - I went into my 'local' evans store earlier in the week, near closing time, started trying on some waterproof shorts for my trip to Afan, when I decided on a pair I went back downstairs to pay. The shop shutters were down and no sales staff to be seen!

After a couple of minutes of milling about around the till someone appeared at the security door at the back of the shop. They looked through the window at me and it was only when I gestured that I wanted to pay for the shorts that they came back into the shop, albeit apologising over and over that he didn't realise I was still in the shop. As I recall it wasn't even 8pm at this point.

The few times i've been in there before the sales staff have been less than enthusiastic. When I asked for advice on which bike to buy for my build, riding style and price I was basically told to decide on a colour first!!!

I much prefer my LBS now!

My local evans shop haven't been too bad as a rule but i must say they do seem a little too layed back which can be a little offputting. Edinburgh cycles on the other hand is in a different league, which is why i bought my bike from them. Always pleasent and very helpfull, especially with any problems. I have to travel over 15 miles more to get the them, so that just shows you the difference a bit of effort into customer service can makes.

  • I've found them to be helpfull - they've agreed to warranty my Spesh, even though I didn't buy it from them. My other local spesh dealer wasn't interested in helping me at all.
  • i have only used them online as i live a long way from thier nearest shop. the service was appauling, i ordeded a santa cruz chameleon frame and easton seat post. frame arived with no seatpost so contacted them at 2pm that day and they assured me that they would have it in that days post on first class, two days later i recieved the post, so it wasnt posted that day! then, the post they sent was the wrong length, so contacted them again and they said they would send the correct one out imidiatly with my card details to ensure i sent back the old one. so the next day at around 4pm i recieved a voicemail message saying that all of the posts were the wrong size! so the next day i call them up and manage to convince the man on the other end to upgrade me foc to a thompson which they had in stock (extra 15 pounds) so 3 days later i recieve my thompson elite to find they have sent the setback post instead of the inline one. called them up and they say it will take a week to get one, so i call the supplier to find that they do next day delivery and have the post in stock, so poor effort to resolve the issue by evans. so i sent it back and kept the original post they sent me just so i could ride my new frame! so ended up spending 55 quid on a post that wasnt the one i wanted! so in the end have a week off my brand new frame! Waste of time! very very POOR SERVICE, i will NEVER USE THEM AGAIN!
