Hey all,

Just a wee q. I used to be into my mountain biking @ Uni, mostly cross country and a bit of downhill. Have an Old marin bear valley with marzocchi bombers (blast from the past eh?) havent really done any in about 7 years now! Im thinking of buying a new bike now, and wondering what you lot thought of the Kona Stuff? Will be using it for a few trails, dropoffs, jumps etc and this looks pretty sturdy. Im 178cm so was gonna go for a 17" frame. Also will be trying to get into freeriding and trials! any ideas? or alternatives. I dont wanna spend too much as itll be more of a hobby (damn mortgages). Im also a doc so any injuries I can patch up myself!

what sort of condition is your old Marin in?,you might be as well getting it serviced and using that for a while , the general consensus is that while Kona's have good frames the component packages on the lower priced ones leave a lot to be desired when compared to other manufacturers(spesh,gt,carrera).
  • A friend has this bike and i hired one for a day. Frame is nice although no one for an all day xc ride. if it is the 07 bike you are going for the spec looks excellent (only the gearing puts me off, but that can be changed and i am biased against shimano anyway).

in responce to the previous poster most of the components are quite good on this bike- hfx9's are brilliant on an £800 bike

You are 5' 8'' and my friend is probably about the same height and has the 17'' frame with no complaints

also look at the Specialized P All Mountain which is about the same price

IMO the Spesh P.All Mountain would be a better choice

the marin aint in bad shape at all. Guess I could use it, altho would prob want to fit discs and the sus forks are not in great shape if this is possible?I do like the idea of the specialized tho! Oh and there was a spelling error in my 1st post, trials not trails (altho both will be good). Thats kinda why i want a sturdy bike that will live up to abuse. Not really in the market for a full bounce, prefer a hard tail. Thanks for the advice guys!
