Well, my personal choice is for a Panaracer Trailraker 2.1 on the rear, and a Bontrager Mud-X 2.0 up front.
It's a great combo. The reason I settled on the Mud-X up front is that I find it much more sure footed than the trailraker on wet rooty stuff.
The Trailraker happily pushes you along through the muddiest of the muddy bits.

What kind of mud and what kind of speed are you riding through this mud?

If its v thick and gloopy then I would use a thinner tyre with large knobs to dig in and find grip. The Panaracer Trailraikers are going to be good for this.

If its slick and slimy then you might want a fatter tyre to get more surface area and grip. Something like a Maxxis Swampthing. It will also tackle wet roots and rocks much better.

Crikey, 1.5s?! They will cut through the mud, that's for sure. But grip on a root? Not a chance.
