I know that the finishing on the picture on my post above was achieved using just light sand paper and some sort of polishing paste. Does anyone knows what it is?

I'm wanting to strip all the paint off my bike and go for a raw metal look. Now i want to know what the process of this will be. I was thinking it'd go something like this:
Clean it all up for a start
Nitromorse all the paint off
Sand it down till its all smooth (recomendations for which paper to use?)
Then clean it up again
Then lots of layers of clear laquar
What else will i need to do to get a nice raw metal finish?

good luck with that, i have just finished sanding down one of my Alu frames and i can tell you, getting a clean shiny metal surface is extremely difficult. hence why im painting my frame. You will almost certainly need some form of sanding device that is capable of getting into all the areas. Doing it by hand like i have done is very time consuming and doesnt give a very good finish. The best option would be to get the whole frame sandblasted by someone who knows what theyre doing.

And it seems that thin sandpaper isn't enough. Something else is needed, some sort of polishing paste.

don't use sandpaper ... you will get a lot better finish if you chemically strip most of it off .
The bits you cant get .... use wire wool, a very fine grade.
lot better results imho

I think that the "something else" is probaly chrome plating wich is probaly very expensive and would only look good on components NOT frames. If you sand your frame the best way to do it is to start of with a very low grade sandpaper (very rough) get a thin strip about 4cm by 60cm rap it around the tube and pull one side at a time backwards and forwards then after you have removed the majority of the paint that way get a finer piece of sandpaper rap it around a tough sponge and sand the frame gently in a circular motion. as for the bits that are hard to get to- good luck!! Be prepared for it to take a while it did when i did it to an old frame that i had.

DONT SAND A ALU FRAME, its to soft a metal and you will see ever mark that the paper makes in it, even if you grade down between rubbing. if you really want you can take it somewhere to be dipped in chemical stripper to clean the frame off. But it will be better just to spray it a metal colour surly?

Check my sig pal. Bit of advice - don't strip and polish your fork lowers!! Looks good but the shine cannot be kept cos they're magnesium. Mine are vinyl wrapped now. The frame will hold its polish for ages once done. When it does start to degrade, a once over with belgom alu sorts it out. Good luck, it's a very long time consuming job, especially if the frame is powder coated.my stripped and polished push-iron http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=127542860

I'd hope the OP had sorted it now, given he asked four and half years ago ;-)0
