Fitting Crown Race

Just a quick one. I want to fit my crown race to my new forks but I don't want to pay £30 for a tool to do it. However, I have found a strong water pipe that has a slightly wider inner diameter than that of the steerer tube. You think it's ok for me to use this to fit the crown race evenly? Or is it a disaster waiting to happen???

Cheers :)

is the water pipe plastic or copper. The plastic ones should be ok.

Another method is to push it on as far as it goes (where it sticks) then hold a piece of wood on it and knock the other end with a hammer. keep moving the wood around so it sits evenly around the crown.

Yeah, the water pipe is plastic so I think I will give it a shot. I got the crown race off my old fork using the hammer and blunt screwdriver technique. I just thought it might be a bit more dificult to fit it evenly with the same method.

Thanks for your help guys 8)

I fitted mine (FSA Orbit) using the hammer/screwdriver technique. There is a flat part outside the bearing surface so there is little risk of doing any harm, and it was quite obvious when it was fully seated. Strangely FSA state that no special tool was needed to fit the race, so I was expecting it to be the type with a split in it, but not so - nevertheless I didn't use a special tool!
