Just to try out the new layout i thought i'd kick off with my ride in this a.m.

Drafting gently along behind someone at about 21mph, he slows down for me to pass. So i do and take it up to about 24mph for a few hundred yards when suddenly a guy passes me fast, must have been doing 28-30mph. Too much for me but 'nuff rsspect!!

What speed do people cruise at on their commute, no wind, clear(ish) road?
17 years commuting up and down the King\'s Road and i still don\'t get faster...

Don't honestly know, I put on some smaller tyres and can't remember how to reprogram the speedo. My commute is off road, and I used to average about 19 mph before changing the tyres, going faster seems like too much effort but the 20minute journey takes 45mins in the car.

Flat, no wind, clear-ish roads. Probably near 21mph. 23mph if I'm on the aero-bars (those extra 2mph are free).

The hills, inevitable wind and traffic slow me down of course.

Average 15-16mph on the 9.4 mile journey in but that inlcudes a big chunk of the 650ft climb over a couple of miles, usually into a bugger of a headwind. Return leg is an average of 19-21mph with a couple of hundred feet climbed, mostly in the last 2 miles.

As for some of the speeds I've seen on here...might I suggest that computers are checked for the correct wheel size as some of the claims appear to be more than a little optimistic

I try to keep on it when commuting in, but not going all out (yet). But my details are as follows

    Bike - Rigid mtb on 26x1.5" slicks. 42/32/22 11-28 (I think) 21spd
    Max Speed 31-33 down hill
    20-22 on the flat.
    Avg 15.6 inc traffic lights...

Starting to spin out in 6th will shortly be looking for a 'new'/ different bike.

Ive never bothered about my average speed on the commute; I'm too busy watching for traffic and its too short, I just know when Ive got leave to get to work in time.

In the middle of the pennines, so flat doesn't happen often... But it usually goes like:
    Average 13mph
    Max 42mph
Normal on the one flat bit, 23mph.

    Embarassing long steep evil hill:
    5mph :(

Average at the start of the year was around 13mph. Thats for an 8.8 mile commute, with approx 500ft of climbing each way and loads of traffic. Now up to around 17.5-18mph although as we have no showers at work, the average to work is around the 15mph mark. I can cruise at well over 25mph on a clear day, with no traffic (and fuelled by caffine and cake). Max this year is 57mph drafting a HGV.

I managed to maintain 27-30mph for a shortish distance on the flat today. I was drafting a builder's lorry at the time, so not sure if that still counts. :?: ;) I thought better of it and dropped back a bit to give me more room when he stopped, but I dropped out of his slipstream and he pulled away from me then causing my speed to drop off rather rapidly.

I normally manage 18-20mph depending on the wind and how tired I'm feeling.

I do around 28 - 32mph down Euston Road then 25 - 27mph up Pentonville Road most days.. ...Some drivers look as if they can't believe a bike can go fast......and some idiots think it's a cue for a race / or really hate the idea that I can go faster than their gridlocked cage.

    It's just training innit

Depends on day of the week and wind direction. By Friday afternoon I'm quite knackered and take it easy on the ride home.

27 mph up pentonville road? what all the way to the top? or 25mph for that matter?

    that's a lungbursting effort.

not that it's a steep hill.

I love tihs place some times. Someone asks what speed people cruise along at on the flat, with no wind, on clearish roads and the thread quickly descends into a pi55ing contest about who can belt up hills the fastest.

40mph is my answer. And I kept that up for pretty much the full 35km descent of Col du Lautaret.

<wees up the side of the wall>

I'll never, ever try and compete against people for speed. I'm more of a lean back, one handed, eat cake at the same time as singing along to music type of person :D

    Sorry...couldn't help it.......

You can get a really good run up Pentonville road if the lights are on your side, just put it in a big gear and hammer it - It's not steep. However, I tend to go up Highgate West Hill at snail pace........

Has anybody put 50+ mph yet??? Look out - some smart ar** will do it soon. To be honest, commuting in and out of B'ham City Centre, anything over 20mph is still way faster than the cars (this must be why they keep trying to hit me)

I used to cruise on my commuter 14-15 mph. With the conti road tyres that's up to 20-21 - the difference is amazing.

by the way, for all the new people, i'm a girl not a bloke (seems to have took a while to sink in on the C+ forum :D )

And here is me at the other end of the spectrum - no 'puter, but I know I do five traffic-light ridden miles through central london in just under 30 mins on a heavy old 'vintage' 3-speed Peugeot (which used to be linked in my sig, but it is coming and going at the mo). Which, doing the maths, puts me at about 10mph on average!

I'm more interested in not needing a shower at the other end and taking it easy.

My top speed is 43.8mph, but if you see the big bloody hill I go down then you'd not be surprised.

On a tourer with panniers top speed ever was 44.somethingMPH down a hill in the lakes on the W2W route.
Cycling to work and round the doors average 10mph (includes hills).
Panniers off and on a run in the morning avoiding the hills I can sit at 18mph just...with my big fat touring tyres...
Never had any skinny tyres and my other bikes are suspension/MTB so speed isn't going to be blinding. :)
Not amazing, but I'm comfortable with them.

I hit 35 mph along Chelsea embankment on my way back from Richmond Park at about 7:20 on monday morning, blew past 2 commuters and a moped and drafted a WVM from Albert Bridge to Chelsea Bridge, loved it! Normal commute I cruise at around 22 but with the occasional sprint up to 28-30 or so when the road allows it.

35 mph along the embankment...cool! I like drafting buses, until some flaming bus stop interferes.

And 7.20 on the embankment. I cross Putney Bridge at about 7 ish most mornings, I WILL see your Wilier one day (that's a bike NOT a spelling mistake!!)

top speed is 31.something, going down Seven Sisters Road, big long hill, I have to try to get it above about 28, it's not really safe going that quick mind

averaging about 15.5, cruise anywhere from 17-22 depending on all the million usual things
