We've just got bike from a superb 2 weeks riding up and around Mont Ventoux. There were loads of cyclists riding up each day, is there anyone left who hasn't done it?!

So I thought I'd give this new fangled forum thing a go. For those who find such things of interest, I've posted a handlebar mounted videocam video of the descent from the summit; be warned it's 25 mins long.

There's a link to it on my home page;

I went over the Ventoux two years back, but i went up from Bedoin and down the other way to Malaucene. I'm sure you had a great time just like I did.
So many roads, so little time!!!

Thanks for raising this. I'm going up the Ventoux on 1st August from Bedoin. After the Galibier and the Alpe last year, I'm really looking forward to it. I'm glad you enjoyed it; that is reassuring.

    but

I bought a new bike this year with a compact chainset and I'm concerned about gearing for it. The lowest I can get on the bike (Specialized Roubaix, carbon, totally love it!) is 36x27. I've ordered a 34t chainring just in case, but last year I was spinning away merrily on touring bike gears at 26x30. I don't mind suffering a bit, but will I make it?

I know the answer depends as much on me as the bike. I am not built like your average goat like climber; quite the reverse, but I'm reasonably strong and have the endurance to do 100 miles non-stop at 15+mph.

Anyone got any tips on gearing for a climb like that?

    Whiskywheels!

Where did you get that handlebar mounted videocam thingy! It's magnificent. Certainly beats descending the Col de Lautaret with one hand on the bars and the other holding the camera, praying that I wasn't going to drop it or run headlong into a snow pole.

Please tell me how you did it. I want one! Now!

There's some useful stuff re Ventoux and gearing on Craig's site at http://www.montventouxwebcam.com/Hints%20&%20Tips.html

I can't remember the details of my helmetcam at the moment, I'll check at home later this afternoon. I think there's lots of people got 'em on this forum, and there's even a whole "videocam your commute" thread!

Thanks, I'll head across this vast wilderness of a message board to find the commuter cam tribe. I could do with camera to record how to get back to the cake stop. Guess I'll have to use a ball of wool or GPS.

It's a whole new world! Out there, there are dozens of videobloggers, traffic cops, spies, vigilantes and curiosity-hunters with little cameras strapped to their temples. Do I join now or do I wait until it's embarassing not to have one? Oh, must go! My polyphonic mobile phone is ringing.

    yes, yes, yes, yes!

And a TOMTOM satnav which the women in my family gave me for my birthday. I regarded that as an insult to my natural inbuilt male sense of direction which has never, ever, ever let me down, anywhere! Well OK, once or twice, but only because the signposting was bad. Oh, and there was that time when the Government had moved Manchester and not told anyone. Oh, and there are more streets in Edinburgh than there were ten years ago and and and ....

'ere, wiv your great command of matters technological, have you any idea why the web links and underlinded text don't work in my previous posts. Oh, and why my last post appears four times?!

Elsewhere in this vast cavern of a message board (which someone has brilliantly likened to the Millennium Dome - huge, white and everyone is complaining about it), there has been uproar about the embedding of naughty pictures in people's signatures etc. Consequently, it appears that the powers that be have indulged in a little virtual prohibition and turned off the knobs that allow the display of knockers. Along with the bathwater of filth goes the baby of helpful weblinking. If we sit tight, I expect an uprising will occur and some of the knobs will get twiddled again.

No idea about the multiple posts.

Love your downhill video. I've got down below the treeline now and paused for breath. What crazy speeds did you achieve?

Nothing too crazy, up to 45 mph further down, but higher up it's less steep and it was very blustery the day I filmed. A few days later doing the same descent ( having ascended from Malaucene) a rider shot past me as if I was standing still.
