Hi Folks,
Can anyone recommend a decent big box/bag to me. I'm flying out to NZ and want to carry my road bike on the flight with me. Most of the hard case systems are almost as much as the airlines weights limits.

Ta in advance

A box is a better protection for the bike than a bag IMO, but they are costly (though some can be rented) and heavy. Bags offer less protection but are lighter. I chose the latter route and bought a bag from Decathlon for £40. Tough nylon, wheel pockets. Tales an MTB at a pinch. I bubble wrapped and padded various vulnerable bits, and it was fine. Only problem was that I didn't have enough padding over the outside of one hub, and the vibration of the flight meant it wore a small hole in the bag - easily solved next time, I'll use some hardboard to prevent point pressure on the bag.

Chain reaction do good bike bags that look like Neil Pryde ones - they're good. And then pipe lag all the pipes on the bike. My carbon bike has survived a few journeys like that.
And they have seperate wheel bags too, with reinforced centres.

The www.groundeffect.co.nz Tardis bag is excellent value, it keeps the package very small, which is important these days as some airlines are tightening up the rules on baggage.

It goes without saying that you need plenty of of pipe lagging, bubblewrap, etc., to keep everthing secure.

The Planet X bag is great - and it's the same one as some of the more expensive ones, just with a different logo.

PX's clearange site, Priceshaggers, has some blue ones going cheap:

Decathlon's trolley bag is the best bag out there.Forks clamp to base of bag to keep bike secure, well padded, wheels at one end so don't need to lug the bike about.I've had one for 3 years, used a lot & still OK.
