stem too long

i recently took my cannondale round to a guy up the road that knows everything about the subject inc mechanics and setup. he looked at me onthe bike and reckoned i'd suit a shorter stem (80mm) the bike is 6 weeks old and not a mark on the original stem, i foned the shop where i bought it and asked ifthey could swap it for a shorter one and got a blatent no. Is this normal as i thought they would have changed it no probs?
