Winter boots?

I know It's almost July but the current weather has me thinking towards the colder wetter months. Are winter boots more effective than normal shoes and neoprone overshoes? My friend has a pair of Shimano boots and says they weren't worth the cash as they're only slightly warmer than shoes and overshoes and they're not as waterproof as Shimano claim, especially round the ankle.

I've seen a pair of Diadora winterboots I like at half the price of the Shimano ones but wonder if its worth it?

This is the second post on winter boots in as many weeks - is this because of the weather? IME, winter boots are only as good as their ability to stop water from running down your leg. For off-road use they can be good because most overshoes can't take that level of abuse, but for road use, a good overshoe can be more effective, particularly as it doesn't have any seams/openings on the front and sits a little higher around the ankle. Many winter boots don't come high enough up the ankle, so you have a section of exposed sock between foot and tights - the socks just soak-up the spray and it runs into the boots!
  • I have the Shimano MT90's and I have to wear Sealskinz socks under them, to make them waterproof.
    So much for Gortex

Seem warm enough to me though.
They are very comfortable, so I will stick with them till they last.
