Forks: Star nut removal

The only way to extract it is to knock it right through and out the bottom. If your new forks have a carbon steerer however, you must use a bung and not a star nut.

Knocking it out is easy, the tricky bit is refitting it straight.[;)]

I've tried knocking it out, but the flamin' forks have a bar welded across the bottom for the brake mount bolt to pass through and I can't get it past it.
Sod it - they're only œ2.99 on Wiggle.......
[new forks are carbon with alloy steerer - but thanks for the info Smokin Joe]

The trick there is to knock it 180 degrees and then hit it out of the top. Fitting can be a git. Last time I did it I used a long bolt and a washer to pull it into the steerer tube from below rather than hit it from above. This proved much easier to keep it level.

I borrowed a Park fitting tool.
Screw the nut to the tool. Place tool with nut aligned on top of the tube. Tap into place with a hammer until the tool is flush. Release tool

At œ25 I should hope you did borrow it!
I'll stick to my "ghetto" methods of installation.[8D]

Just shows how beneficial a longstanding (25 years) relationship with a good Local Bike Shop is!
