noisy 105 groupset
Just brought a new bike and the middle chain ring makes a horrible noise. there are what appear to be 4 very small blades connected to the chain ring just below where the chain sits between the teeth; it makes a creaking sort of noise most noticeably twice per peddle revolution, i'm convinced that these blades are causing it. Even on the big and little chain ring the chain is noisy, but doesn't creak. it's a sram chain and the 105 group is the older 9 speed version. anyone got any experience of this and how to shut it up. my old bike has sora on it which provided i clean and lube regularly runs quiet as a mouse, that satisfying whirrrrr...

is it a 10 speed chainset + a wider 9 speed chain?
or is the chain an old one?

it is the 9 speed set and the bike and chain are brand new albeit ex dispay but unridden. the chain is a sram PC68 which on their website says it is compatible with 8 or 9 speed

Quote "makes a creaking sort of noise most noticeably twice per peddle revolution" ...take off pedals, lube threads with copperslip and all should be quiet

I may be wrong but i thought PC68 was 5 to 8 speed MTB chain....
PC951, 971 and 991 are more commonly 9 speed roadbike chains. I assume cos youre running Shimano 105, you are riding a roadbike?

The PC68 is an upto 8 speed - get a specific 9 speed one - it's actually SRAMs top 8 speed chain. Can recommend the KMC x chains, although I've got an 8 speen on my 8 speed Dura-Ace.0

thanks for your input.
the Sram website says that the PC68 is for 8 or 9 speed gearing. if i swap it for another chain should i go for a Shimano one to match the group set?

Well, it's wrong - every other online shop states clearly that the PC68 is 8-speed. If Sram give false info on their site then IMO you would be within your rights to ask for compensation from them for buying the wrong chain and the likely damage that running it may have done to your chainset (depending on how long it's been used).
there's no such thing as steep hills - just the wrong gear

Thanks for the help.
I contacted SJScycles and the guys response was instantly 'Oh shouldn't have been fitted with a PC68 that's an 8 speed, i'll get one in the post for you, that should quiet things down a bit'
Can't fault that sort of customer service, shame it was shipped with the wrong one in the first place.
