Commute across Edinburgh

Hi everyone, this is my first post but I have been a member for a while.

I live in Kirkcaldy and work at Gogarburn, so my journey normally involves me chucking the bike in the car and going to Dalgety Bay and then biking it to work. A 2 week hovercraft trial from Kirkcaldy to Portobello is going to be run in July and I am going to give it a go as an alternative way over the Forth. Does anybody have suggestions for routes between Portobello and Gogarburn (road bike or mtb)please. I have been looking at maps online, but nothing beats actual experience.

Ta

Scott

    Wow. Another Kirkcaldy C+er?!

Thought I was the only one.

Can't help you with the route, I'm afraid - I work in Glenrothes - but I thought I'd say hi.

Get a copy of a SPOKES map for Edinburgh, they are quite detailed

If I had a baby elephant, who would take it for walks?

Yet another Kirkcaldy inhabitant (sorry). Don't Edinburgh bike coop also do local route maps, or are they just churning out SPOKES ones too?

Used to cycle to S. Queensferry for a commute and I remember there being a cycle path heading towards Dalmeny near the railway, but I don't know if it actually goes into Edinburgh or just heads out along the coast.

You can just about get all the way there on a bike path - basically I would go along the front to Ocean Terminal and then a little further - the path I take to work ends there. It emerges right on the main road - if you go past Ocean Terminal it's a few hundred yards on your left.

Follow the path all the way to The Royal High School - at Craigleith Retail Park (or the Quarry as they're trying to call it now) you'll have to turn to your right - almost back on yourself at first - if you keep going you would end up at Roseburn.

Then you have a choice - either keep following the path to Barnton and then work your way through the houses there to the Turnhouse road and you're basically at the Gyle.

Or (and I would probably do this) leave the path at RHS and cross the Queensferry Road at the lights - go into the houses there at the bus stop (there's a kerb stopping cars) and follow the road up the hill (not too steep) to the top of the Drumbrae. Then go down and turn right at the roundabout and straight out the Glasgow Road. This is better as it is much more direct and the roads are pretty good - green lane to the Gyle. Going through the houses there misses out the steepness of the hill too.

The other option would be to stay on the cycle path to Roseburn and then just follow the Glasgow Road from there - green lanes again apart from a bit in Corstorphine. That way is maybe actually slightly shorter and it's pretty flat.

I'm left handed, if that matters.

    Hi there.

Off topic: Ravenbait - heard you've been seen on the Triathlon circuit... any more races coming up?

    Cheers, Andy

They are trialing 4:50 return, what's the train these days?

The train's about 8 quid, IIRC. Frood's monthly pass works out at over a fiver a day for the return on the train. œ4.50's cheap!

    Andrew: I'll PM you.

  • Thanks for the replies.
I'll try out all of those routes K-dog. Could be interesting being involved with that much traffic. My normal route tends to keep me away from it apart from Crammond Brig
I don't know how viable the hovercraft will turn out to be. They are going to charge œ9.50 for a peak (before 9am) return. I have been in contact with Stagecoach and the hovercraft can take up to 6 bikes on a first come, first served basis. I think I will give the first day a miss as know doubt it will be full of journo's and local politicians.
