Hi

I am considering getting my 8 year old son one of the Decathlon kids racing bikes but as I live nowhere near a Decathlon it is very difficult find out what type of spec it is.
Does anyone have one that could tell me a bit about the bike and what their thoughts are?
Especially interested in number and type of gears. Ratios would also be good to know. If you have any pics it would help too

My son is hoping to use it to get up Alpe D'Huez or at least part of it.

If you can help it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Peter..

Cant find it on the BTwin site
I'll post some pics later (my daughter has took it to school today for her cycling proficiency test)
If you want a road bike @ the price there is nothing to touch it

My son has one, and loves it (for the money you can;t go wrong as they soon outgrow them anywaY).
BUT - it is a basic bike, downtube shifters, steel frame, etc. As far as I remember it's a triple chainset with six speed block. It does have low gearing (not sure on ratio's without checking), and child specific crankarms.
If your son's serious you may be better looking at Islabikes. More money, but STi's, better specced and alloy frame I think.

Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

Thanks for the advice. This would be his first racing bike and I want to see how he enjoys it. Maybe then I would buy a "better" bike for him. For about œ100 the Decathlon bike does seem good value.
More interested in what gearing is on it so I will know if he has a chance of getting up some of the alps!!

    Thanks

lets all take 2 minutes & pray for this 8 year olds knees..

IMHO as a coach who has worked a lot with young riders this type of terrain is too much ..
its a lot for a fit adult to do let a lone a child with developing joints/muscles etc..

Are you saying that cycling up hills is worse for kids knees than running around a football pitch??

Also surely that is what gears are for - to reduce the impact?

for rides like Alpe d'huez - yes ..

Its his dream actually. I have been up the Alpe several times so know what to expect. I personally would rather he was out cycling than spending all his time in front of a computer or playstation so dont want to put him off.
It is very unlikely that he will get very far up but he wants to try!

Unfortunately where I live the support for kids cycling is very poor. There are no facilities or races for them at all.

so would i but i think joining your nearest go ride scheme would be best .....good luck if he goes up...perhaps snowdonia would be a good warm up

also pick an ISLABIKE over the decathlon..isla rowntree builds fantastic little bikes...

Decathlon STockport had them for œ60, and I've seen them for similar prices in France.

  • I remember my first proper bike. I was also about 8 at the time. It was green made of steel and simplex gears with downtube shifters and its tyres looked about 50 years old as we could not find any that were the right size, but I didn't care. I loved it. It was better than sliced bread.

My dad bought it for my birthday and I had to go to Manchester to look at it. It took about 3 hours to get there but I didn't care.

This was a couple of weeks before my birthday and I wasn't allowed to ride it until my birthday. Those two weeks felt like forever, but it was well worth the wait for me.

ANYWAY more to the point is he's 8, and if it is his dream, not yours, he won't care if is as rusty as the titanic, he'll just be glad to have a road bike.

What Decathlon store did you get yours from? And where was it reduced to £33.

Travelling down England this weekend so could go to the appropriate store.

    Thanks

Do decathlon do a 26" version as well, just that the 24" may be a little small.

I also have an eight year old that loves hills, will leave most people for dead on climbs. I am also a bit worried about doing too much with him.

There is nothing for kids locally, he can't ride with any of his friends because they can't keep up, tried some local road clubs, but they don't seem interested in Kids.

Called Decathlon Stockport - none in stock right now - does anyone know if this is end of line or are they likely to get more stock?

Got one of the Decatlon bikes in Dudley and took it to France on holidays for my son to ride. After being a little unstable at first he is now flying on it. Even to the point that my wife cant keep up with him.

Lifeson - thanks for the help and the offer but Decathlon did put one aside for me.
Also seen them for sale in France for a similar price.
