What to wear?

I know I shouldn't be talking about this yet, but I like to be prepared.
When the sun does actually shine it's lovely to get out in just a short sleeve jersey and shorts.
But what do you all wear when it's:-

starting to get quite cold and chilly?

and if you ride through winter, what then?

Cheers

    Mudguards!

    Failing that, a house.

Shorts all year round with knee warmers and a long-sleeve top when it's cold. Don't mind getting wet in the summer, but in the winter I'll wear a lightweight jacket and overshoes as well as a cycling cap (the rain drips off the peak) and waterproof gloves. I regard the cold weather as an incentive to keep moving quickly!

I'm a big fan of neck gaiters, as you can adjust them to protect your face, cover your head, or just seal the top of your jacket. And if it gets really cold, try these - http://www.coldlizard.com/cgi/wc.dll?GE ... ~DETAIL~34 - I had a pair that served me down to 14F (-10C) and would easily have gone colder. The only downside is that once I had them on I only had a couple of minutes to get out of the house before being felled by heat exhaustion!

My cycling wardrobe has varying amounts of:

    Shorts, Bibshorts
    Short sleeved jerseys
    Arm, leg, knee warmers
Short sleeved and long sleeved base layers
    Tights
    Long sleeved jerseys
    Wind proof soft shell
    Gilet
    Overshoes
    Long and short fingered gloves
    Buffs
    Thick and thin socks
    Heavy and lightweight waterproofs

Mix and match to get an ideal outfit for any conditions.

My wardrobe is similar to Pirahna's:

    Lots of shorts and bibshorts.
    Lots of short sleeved tops.
Short sleeved thermals for slightly chilly days.
Arm and legwarmers for slightly cool days - arm warmers are great because you can roll them down when you get hot.
A windproof gilet is surprisingly effective at keeping me warm.
I have long sleeved tops for all weathers, -5 to 13C. Some people buy one or two expensive ones and use them in all conditions, I prefer to buy more cheap ones but select the garment for the weather. I have a windproof and it is nice, although I find it quite hot.
Thermal baselayers for those really cold days.
Tights and bibtights - with windproof fronts for coldest days.
    Earwarmers.
    Hats.
    A buff.
Mitts and gloves - from thin to thick "lobster" gloves.
    Overshoes.
Bigger shoes with space for extra socks.
    Waterproofs.

I'm sure I have forgotten something. I know this list is ridiculously long, but I buy a few things each year and just build it up. I think that a warmish long sleeved top and baselayers, with a thin windproof, can see you through most weather (plus something on the bottom half!).
