what grease

im new to bike repairs im resonably mechanicly minded and dont mind having a go and the cost of the lbs adds up so im having a go.

qestions- what grease would you use on the bearings do i grease the column.(will a common machine grease be ok)
do i need to replace the bearings or will the originals be ok

    Rock'n'roll super web grease - impervious to water, specifically designed for bearings and not too pricey IMO. not sure who distributes it in the uk but the following US site ships internationally

    ... I'm not a chemical engineer, and it'll prolly cost a tad more, but I'd opt for a quality white grease with teflon avaiable from your LBS (Finish Line offers good products)...

    Grease, like oil, can have specific properties and uses so I think I'd avoid automotive unless you, or someone eles here on the forums can recommend.

    In general, bearings need only be replaced when they show obvious signs of wear (which can sometimes be too late)... repacking can keep bearings "young" for years (depending on the type).

    You dont say which bearings. But presuming the bike is an older type with loose bearings in the the head tube, wheels and bottom bracket then yes general purpose lithium bases grease is fine. Anything newer then it may be best to wait for more advice.
