How much rain have you had?

The car park and bike shed at work were under 2 feet of water when I left work at about 3pm today. I put bin liners on my feet so I could wade out, almost up to my knees, to get my bike. The water level was over the bottom bracket when I got to it. The bin liners did not work as they split at the bottom, water came over the top and they got wrapped around the cranks. I ended up ripping them off. I would post videos and photos of it but my phone is on the blink now after getting wet as well. It was a lot of fun though. [:D]

Other people had stayed because their cars had broken down when they tried to move them. The roads back to some peoples houses are flooded and I think they are stuck at work for the night now. [8)] [xx(]

lol. More than normal but not as much as that. The weather is vaguely damp and if it ever clears up the plants should all put on a bit of a growth spurt quite easily [:)]

We had to evacuate work today as we're next to a river and it overflowed..

Was quite funny cycling past chelsea tractors with only handlebars and seat dry though!!

One months rain in 24 hours here in Sheffield. the RAF are airlifting people from office blocks tonight.
  • We had a lot when I took the gutter off to paint the wood, so I put it back and it stopped. Dont worry the gutter staying on now , no more rain.

I've just seen it on the news Sheffield git it bad

If I had a baby elephant, who would take it for walks?
  • Got a call from work saying the office was being abandoned just as I was getting ready to set out. Nice of them to ring me first.

Man died just down the road. Hope everyone in Sheffield is OK. Most rain in a single day since records began according to the TV.

PS is Leeds the new London? Local TV didn't mention East or South Yorkshire until the helicopters started going in.

You'll be even worse off if that dam goes...[:0] Hope it doesn't!

I've said it in another thread, but it bears repeating I think. Do all be careful riding or walking through flood water. Drain covers can be forced up by the flow, leaving a large hole, probably invisible under the mucky water. You fall down one, you could drown. So take care!

Surprisingly perhaps, the Ouse here in York is not at its worst at the moment - only over the north side riverside path, not the Southbank side. But I expect it's still on the way up...

Sheffield and Rotherham etc did look bad. Hope everyone is OK?

2foot all around. Luckily the house and floor levels are just above the water level.

Here in Hull we evacuated to sister-in-law's last night as the kitchen was flooded and it looked like it would breach the rest of the house. Electric off, family out!

Waded back to the house this morning (through the still-flooded street) to find that the house hadn't been breached and the water level was ever so slowly dropping - phew!!!

Sad thing is we've just spent a good deal of cash on the house and put it on the market this week [:(] Timing eh ... !

    Where is the aforementioned dam??
I have heard today from a colleague who didn't make it as a roundabout was under 3 ft of water, that they have also closed the M1, as a dam is about to burst, potentially flooding the M1, and several villages, and allegedly some of Nottingham.

(When I was househunting a few years ago, I was advised to look for watermarks 4 ft up the wall in riverside / low lying areas eg Attenborough...)

Yup. Last I heard, they were still trying to pump water out of the reservoir to reduce the strain....

Apparently part of the risk is not just the possible barrage of water, but the likelihood of it taking out a couple of electricity pylons...

Hey, Maz, thought of you when I saw Sheffield. You OK? Not washed away, I assume, as you're online...

Wow, I feel for you all. Had hardly none here. In fact I haven't worn my waterproofs for ages. Don't get me wrong we have had some rain but manly at night when I'm in bed. lovely and sunny this morning. And the usual spots on my ride that are prone to flodding are fine.

  • Two people kipped in the office last night. The car park was still under two feet of water this morning and I helped out with clearing the water from one of the units. We had a pump going to clear the car park and it pumped 3 gallons of water a second. It was running for 8 hours!! Thats 388,800 litres of water!!

I discovered those seal skin waterproof socks don't work very well. One kept most out the other didn't.

Yeah, Arch. Thanks for asking. I'm fine...one of the advantages of living in a house towards the top-end of one of Sheffield's many steep streets.
